Since I use my rear hand to attack as well, my lead tool isn't my only weapon, I need to have my torso a little more square off of the center-line.

This way if I have to move laterally it is in a sense like moving backward or forward, from the perspective of my torso not my head.
Mostly though its just that the whole point of fencing footwork is to be as light and deft as possible. If muhammad ali floated like a butterfly for boxing then imo the equivalent fencing would float like hummingbird
