>self-defense - someone attacks you at a bar, you do just enough to get away
>mutual combat - someone insults you, you both agree to "take it outside"
>self defense into assault - someone attacks you and you do enough to neutralize the threat, but still continue to attack afterward
>self defense into assault into attempted murder - someone starts a fight, you finish it, but go a little too far
>self defense into assault into murder - someone starts a fight and you finish it by going over the edge
