In theory it's meant to make it easily visible for the trainer who gets around to a lot of places who is competent with the basics.

In reality it's basically microtransactions and doesn't demonstrate competency of anything but memorising dance moves (judo, bjj and kyokushin excepted)

Belts represent knowledge, not necessarily ability. If you keep that in mind it makes more sense.

Unfortunately McDojos have fucked up the belt system and turned it into a money train, so where it used to provide structure and a visible indicator of a student's learning progress now it's just another way of boosting membership fees.

If a club forces students to grade at set intervals walk away.
