>>649235980Okay, let's assume that the bloody thing is going to hit this god-damned Earth. First of all, there is 75% chance that it's going to hit the ocean and create a Tsunami wave which can be easily detected and people can be safely evacuated. Few destroyed homes a bunch of concussed whales and that's it.
But let's think about a land hit. Populated area is still only a fraction of land area of Earth so chance of massive destruction of human infrastructure is still small. This thing is about twice as massive as the Tunguska event meteor and energy scales roughly linearly with mass, so one can expect destruction twice as big. Now Tunguska was 2000 sq. km of trees, buildings tend to withstand more than trees but w.e., let's assume that 4000 sq. km (~65 km side square) will be destroyed and there are little to none survivors. This is roughly one big city with it's surrounding suburbs.
Explain to me how losing a city with suburbs is going to cause the end of humanity? And no, ejecta from impact will not be important. Back when Americans and Soviets were playing with their nuclear bombs out in the open they vomited more nuclear waste into the atmosphere and nobody gave two shits.
So calm the fuck down everyone.
