Yes, most Germans swear it's totally different, but what they consider great are the mass-produced generic pilsners. Anybody who has really dived into the American craft brew scene will find anything comparable in Germany. You might luck out by stumbling onto the extremely rare brewpub, but if none of those are aroundโ—โand you have to get your beer at even the best German supermarketโ—โyou'll be OOL.
In Germany, it's very difficult to find beers comparable to even mid-level American craft brews you get at any U.S. supermarket or gas station (depending on where beer is sold in the U.S.)
Look, I do this every year. The thing I miss MOST when I'm in Germany is the incredible variety of high-level American beers.
