Soo my freind of mine died a few months ago. We both planned a trip to Japan and got our tickets Around January ... he had freinds over there and knows places and etc since he's lived out there, but I never been there...

What should I do?

The subways are phenomenal, don't spend money on a taxi when you can take the subway.
You'll see something like pic related in every station and some of then are posted in English.

Hmm I stayed with family friends when I visited a few months ago but if you're not keen on spending too much, maybe look into sleeping capsules? They shouldn't be too expensive and relatively easy to find/book.
Idk how you are with food but try to keep an open mind, there's a lot of amazing stuff out there

Use google maps for the subway and train if your looking to sightsee, try Airbnb for living arrangements, don't be afraid to try back alleyway food places. Don't get butthurt when they give you the you can't come here when you enter a place to eat or drink, because some places are open up to locals only and if the owner knows you it's not because your American. Be respectful and I would learn some common phrases before you go.

I'm assuming that's USD? Yeah 3 grand is plenty, my brother and I spent around 1500 USD each for 10 days, but that's excluding hotel, most of our money was spent on souvenirs.

You will get around ok. I lived there in the arse end of nowhere for 18 months speaking no japanese and managed. Also, why with them hosting the Olympics soon they have improved signage in trainstations.
