In my country if one of my structures fail and someone dies, i will have a very hard trial, if anything i did was slightly different than the norm, then im going to jail. If a doctor kills a patient, its a woopsie poopsie nobody wants to talk about. Doctors can be the greatest tards and still be a doctor and cause all the harm they want, pieces of shit.
Also, often doctors apply remedies without knowing the causes, sometimes creating more troubles or healing nothing at all. Many people fear going to the doctor, nobody fears going to the engineering office.

There have been civil engineers that commit suicide because of the guilt they feel when one of their structures fails and kills hundreds of people. It is adorable when doctors think they have tremendous responsibility.

They are different disciplines. Medical Science is effectly a reverse engineering of an existing system and then hacking what you partially understand of the code operating the system.

Engineering on the other hand is a discipline of actually design and creation of something previously non-existent.

Becoming a surgeon is a long hard road but most find it incredatly satisfying. One road to go is become a military doctor. If you have the grades and constitution, you get your degree and a tour of duty. By the time you are in your mid-30s, you can discharge and civilian hospitals love surgeons of this experience.

Sure, you can say that a group of workers still outweighs what surgeons do every day, but. You don't ever get the agonizing opportunity to tell the family, or the person himself that he's got only 2 hours to live or he died because you didn't do you job quick enough or well enough or you didn't study into his condition enough, even after spending large sums of hours trying to keep the man alive.

Not to mention what happens in ER, problem is, disasters don't happen everyday, while working in the ER, well that happens around 10-20 times a day, and if its overloaded sometimes, you have to choose who will live, and who will die.

I kinda concur, but it's pretty fuzzy. For one thing there's plenty of overlap. The tools, implants, and facilities med uses for example require engineering. Then there's biomed engineering. And also, you know, details like availability of clean water. And enough affordable food. And shelter. All kinda important things to keep a person healthy.
More or less a draw in the end I'd say.

You don't seem to understand the problem. A patient is not the same as a mechanical device.

All patients differ, their symptoms differ, the way they express their symptoms differ, their bloodwork differ, their reactions to treatment differ etc.

This is why us doctors go for the "gut feeling" sometimes. And i don't think a machine or electronical device can do that as accurately as me in the near future.

In the disatant future, say 2150 probably yes, but by then the society and the term "job" will be changed soo much.

Also, if a doctor can be replaced by a robot then nearly all other jobs can be too, and we would be living in a very different society.

I never said a robot can't beat me at anything i do. I just said I don't see a near future where all healthcare professionals are totally obsolete. A lot of our workload has already been replaced by USG, MRI, PET, CT, Bronchoscopy, fluoroscopy etc and i don't mind it. It was a change for the better for both the doctor and the patient.

Yes, exactly. An AI will do whatever is at the top of it's utility function. When you make a new AI you define its utility function by specifying what you want it to do. They do not make their own goals.

Here's the thing - most people tend to anthropromorphize AI when they talk about it. They think it will be human like. But it won't. All it will do is *exactly* what you ask it to do, but it will be extremely efficient at doing that thing. It's a maximizer. Intelligence does not come with consciousness or self-awareness unless you *specifically* build those things into it. Humans have self-awareness not because of how intelligent they are or how many neurons they are but because of the exact structure of those neural connections. You could stack neurons all day into a vastly powerful brain and not get a computer that is capable of questioning its own place in the universe or generating new goals.

All AI will do is figure out the best way to achieve its utility function.

The signularity isn't something anybody is trying to 'make', it's just a predictive concept that says there is a point where the future becomes difficult to predict. Like how you can't see past the event horizon of a black hole (singularity) because of the distortion involved. A human body is not a particularly complicated machine, nowhere near as complex as building a bridge or a jet engine.
However a jet engine is not a person
a jet engine does not have a family
it doesn't posses fears or doubts that must be calmed before work can be done on it - an engineer does not need the trust of the jet engine before it will agree to be repaired.
A jet engine does not require multiple machines keeping it alive while being worked on.
The point i'm trying to make is that working with people is very different to machines, and that trying to compare the two is completely fucking retarded
