i've had the misfortune of being a TA in a course that had both graduate and undergraduate students. all but one of the graduate students were indian and they took up the vast majority of my time (even compared to the undergrads which made up the majority of the course enrollment). the one chinese grad student only asked me for help twice throughout the entire semester and it was for complicated portions of an assignment.

it was surreal. the indian grad students took no initiative, had to have their hands held, and the moment something wouldn't go as expected they would call me over instead of giving it another attempt.

Foreign students tend to perform better than their American classmates, at least in my program. I'm fairly sure it's just custom to admit 50% American students. Also, there's problems with evaluating curriculum but we've been doing it so long, we can judge the other international leading schools quite accurately. Their biggest barrier is social skills and language...which, while they're much higher than the average /biz/ user, they're still not fluent in American social politics. Usually they realize the skills later in their careers, long after it can significantly benefit them.

it frustrates me that the US teaches down to a common denominator while other countries (pick india for example) don't put up with students who won't learn. substituting US STEM with alien STEM just side-steps the entire problem of american education. perhaps the US should model the education systems of india or china. I guarantee that if the US did, you wouldn't be so sure that the "average US student" would be the beta bottom.

it's about time we get rid of free primary education and start paying teachers what they're worth... instead of treating them like baby-sitters for the underprivileged.

Raising the national education standards is extremely hard. On the level of a single department or corporation, it doesn't matter...it's arbitrary. Also, the "system" is only of minor importance. It's much more important that students be more driven than their programs.

The flight of scientists to the United States leading up to WWII is a major contributing factor to its unilateral super power status. Operation Paperclip further cemented this. Even today our dominance in computer technologies is predicated on taking top talent from other countries and feeding them into our universities.

Guess how many Physics and Math PhDs are working in STEM fields?

I'll be honest I don't know exact US statistics, but in the UK it's less 30% for Physics and less than 5% for math according to 2014 statistics. Yes a large portion is in finance, but an even larger portion is working minimum wage in retail or are baristas etc.

STEM is simply oversaturated and it's fucked up that my tax money is being used to make my prospects even worse. It only helps the people who can afford lobbyists in the first place. It's not a level playing field.
