Hello /biz/, I am a sole proprietor in America. I only make around 40k/year gross, and after taxes, fees, food, rent, utilities, etc. I don't have two pennies to rub together. Excluding deductions, I'm paying about ~40% of my total income in a combination of taxes and fees. I write off everything I can think of, the point where I constantly wonder if they're going to audit me, yet it still seems like I've barely made a dent.

Why the fuck are taxes for small businesses so outrageously high? I've heard about becoming an S-Corp or some shit like that, but it just seems like I'd be giving more reasons for the IRS to get annoyed with me and make my life harder. Not saying 40k/year is a shitload of money, but I am literally eating rice and potatos for 90% of my meals just to get by.
