Serious discussion
What does /biz/ think about 3d printers?
Do you guys think they will become far more popular/valuable in the near future?
I think we should invest in them now.

I have a feeling they will become extremely mainstream in the near future. I was thinking about finding a printer company to invest in.

I think it's too soon to tell. It's great tech, but it's in its infancy. I think its far too inefficient and expensive to replace current manufacturing technology for a long time

Bubble hit about a year ago. Every 3D printing company popped by about 100% then fittered out.

General consensus is that while the tech is neat, it's nowhere near a household product. It's not the next microwave, it's more like an esoteric appliance. Great for those that want one, but not a large enough market segment. The industrial applications are far more interesting/profitable, but harder to stay ahead of.

The problem is that the printers that are both affordable and practical to consumers are essentially just toys that only print trinkets

The printers that can fabricate all the wood and metal cuts for a house and produce complex and strong mechanism, are just not commercially viable yet.

We're at the point now with 3D printers that we were with regular printers in the 80's. They're too big, too expensive, and just overall not yet advanced enough.

There's also a big grey area in the law with them. What happens when you can just create brand name products from the schematics (Don't know what they're actually called) that you got online for free?

What happens when people can create weapons with them?

3D printing is going to fuck with a lot of big money. There's going to be a big push back against them

There was another article like 5 months back about how anime enthusiasts were using 3D printing to create models of their waifus and sell them for way cheaper than the professional ones, I thought that one was pretty top kek

I personally bought one today on the Amazon daily deal. I at least want to play around with it and see if any of my ideas for products could actually work. I would still produce from a factory though
