It's a good thing I have money saved up.
I left my job a few months ago to move across the country, simply because the girlfriend and I wanted to try something new.
I'm currently working for my previous employer remotely, doing PLC programming and related activities. It's OK. I get $500/week from them for up to 10 hours of work. I usually work between 1 and 5 hours, so my effective rate is pretty good.
They also send me on service calls, because now that I'm gone, they are kind of fucking things up. When I get in front of these customers, I build good rapport and they pointblank ask me if I will work for them. I explain my relationship with my previous employer and that as long as what I'm doing is on machines that are under warranty, that I'll work for them.
So yeah, I'm starting to send quotes and invoice new customers. It's exciting, but stressful. Based on previous billings and an open order, I will make about $16,000 in 6 months. It's good considering I don't work that much, but not sustainable.
Unfortunately this is VERY niche work, so expanding without cannibalizing my previous employer's customers or doing actually unethical stuff is quite hard.
I need to find a normal job like the rest of the world.
