Yes basically. The fed had to keep asset aka real estate prices up or else we will enter a deflationary spiral because most mortgagees are over leveraged

If we just buy all this toxic stuff it's a better net result than banks going bankrupt and more foreclosures happening?

you raise inflation you lower real rates

you lower real rates you can get some actual growth (currently they are nominally at 0 and growth still sluggish)

you buy assets with new money you raise inflation.. except you don't because we're stuck in this japanese stagnation
