Business Planning for the Apocalypse

I am about 73% sure the apocalypse or 'the happening' will happen in the next 25 years and 100% sure it will happen in my lifetime.

What items will become worthy?
What should we invest in?
What are good apocalyptic business models?

I am personally thinking of buying a few packs of batteries every week. Keeping them sealed so they wont spoil(Yes batteries spoil). Can probably sell them for high price when people need energy.
Maybe I should stock up on rice or wheat seeds, but not sure how long I can keep them good.

If you're 100% sure, then take out a a loan and buy a huge plot of land, build a huge wall around it, and then put a giant bunker buried under the ground. Then stock it with several years worth of food, general goods, toiletries, generators, and ammo.

And no I don't mean "everyone will go crazy", I mean think of what the future is like when the creepy street stalkers and scumbags in your nearest trashy city don't have to worry about police. Picture Ferguson Missouri where those people could do whatever they want.

There is still a connected community that cares for each other in Ferguson. Its not like its "Everyone for themselves".

Previous disasters, surveys and simulations have shown that people will actually group together and help each other in case of emergencies.

In third world countries that kind of already live in a permanent post-apocalyptic situation usually have tighter communities then in those of first world countries and are usually socially better prepared for emergencies.

The problem with first world countries is that people have become so brainwashed to the idea of materialism and greed that they think they must loot random crap, destroy random shit, and shoot everyone just to survive.

The happening will require more skills rather than products. Any survivalist, military personnel, or legit prepped will tell you skills trump gear always.

Good skills:
Basic survival skills, combat, outdoor, camping, hunting, agriculture, identifying types of plants that can be poisonous, basic carpentry, basic electrician/engineering knowledge, agriculture, medical knowledge (injuries, medicine, etc)

Also look up most likely "happenings" that you will 1) survive, 2) leave a world worth living in still, not wanting to an hero. So a meteor or solar flare that will kill us all should not be prepped for. Stuff like economic/social/infrastructure collapse, plague like disease, etc.

The areas that will be most dangerous will be where large amounts of people rely on public service, so poor urban areas. Safest will be out in the country.

In recessions/depressions, "the rich get richer" because they buy low, invest, in hard assets, during these times.

I would get a homestead ranch out in the country, get to know your neighbors and community, build a great library, build a great bunker, a strong fence

the strategy that makes the most sense to me is the 'barbell' approach Taleb writes about. Have one set of investments for business as usual, one for unlikely events. The more unlikely events are covered by the latter, the better. Tobacco is a pretty popular replacement for currency, and I think spices in general might be interesting - pepper used to be a major commodity and as tradeable as gold. Lord knows people would miss spices if they didn't have them, particularly ones that have to be imported.

On a related note, I will inherit about 40 acres of ocean front in rural Nova Scotia someday, and my father and I have been discussing what to do with the 20 acres that aren't currently developed. One idea that appeals to us both is to put in a road and let people buy or rent lots basically large enough for a cabin, With access to a community kitchen/bathroom/workshop so long as you get along with everyone else.

this idea is currently as vague as I make it sound, but if the details were worked out, what do y'all think would be a good price, either to buy a tiny lot outright or to pay as a yearly 'insurance' to have a bug-out location should 'prepper X' want it?

Why would anybody want gold in a time when the world falls to shit? We would probably revert to a barter system people everyone is too stupid to figure out what value to give gold or how to identify fakes.

What you want is land and ammunition. Aquire these before a total break down and you've got a chance. I'd recommend land somewhere hard to access that you could also farm.
