If it means that someone attained wealth (or substantially enhanced what they inherited) or achieved a prestigious position in a niche that they sought to dominate, then the answer is going to be hard work.
If you define it as someone who never had to work hard and still has it made, then it'll be luck. But, if that's how you define success, then it's probably a reflection of you. Now, if you say that someone made the "lucky" choices while working toward something, and that's why they were successful, then you're probably overlooking the fact that they did a ton of research before making an educated guess.
