Why is it that job posts don't display salary?

I have noticed this a lot in corporate locations. I am in the market for a new job but when looking at these websites for.. lets say a consultant position, the salary isn't posted.

When would one find out the salary? The salary isn't the ONLY major point for me trying to get a job but it is important.. I am not going to go to a place that doesn't offer more than what I make now right? That sounds super greedy..

Is most of it discussion? Like do people discuss in the interview what they want to make?

Because it creates informational asymmetry in favor of the employer. Think about this scenario - everything goes well and they ask you: what compensation would you like? Lets say their actual range is 60k-80k.

Scenario 1: You answer below 80k, be it 45k, 65k or 79k. Great! They just saved themselves the difference and you're none the wiser.

Scenario 2: You answer above the 80k range. In this case they inform you that their maximum is 80k, and its up to you to take it or leave it.

Obviously, some fraction of the people will answer below - so those are consistent savings on hiring.

I see.. makes total sense. So when they DO ask you what you want.. Do you always say something really high or average? I am not experienced in jobs yet because I haven't had many full time jobs. I have worked at a kitchen as a part time dish washer and as a technician for a electric company. Thats it.

Day two people apply for the same job listed as 80k.The first guy is only worth 70, but the second guy is worth 80. The first guy will think he's worth 80k too

Likewise, some more qualified might not even respond if the listed salary is lower than they expect

Must be a shit industry fam. I'm STEM, every job list salary on first lines plus any/all benefits. Only ones that don't are contract/temp work.

I don't have a car and that particular requirement makes it seem like a car is required. However, at most of these large companies you can't just call in and have them specify what it means. How do you get more details on the position? More than whats in the posting.

Preferably you would ask first, so that you wouldn't even waste your time if the figure is much much lower of what you expect, although unless you're in a huge demand - they'll ask you once you pass the interview and they like you. Always say the highest number you think you can get away with. And since you'll subconsciously lower it anyway, take that number and add 25% to it.

That basically means that for half of your work - they might send you out to remove clients. If you're ok with that, apply. Ask if they cover work related transportation for travel assignments, 99% that it will be covered.

Jesus dude, I am not applying to be a hitman or something!

Now here is the kicker... I actually can't drive at all. Never learned. I usually just take the bus everywhere. Normally a job would say if a car or license is required though right?

Yes, unless its directly related to driving, it would say if its needed. Ask them in the interview. If theyre hiring you for your brains then shelling out for you to take a taxi wont be a problem.

Commodity jobs for commodity people. Talented employees are not created equal, and jobs with upward potential are flexible by definition.

If you accept a job with a fixed salary means you're fixed in your job. Sucks to be you.

After you email them your resume with a question at the bottom explaining what you're willing to work for and a notice that anything below $50,000/yr need not reply.

yup and generally the company doesn't want to pay more than they have to - so lots of companies are basically lazy and look at your existing salary then make you an offer based on say existing salary + 10-15%

and that is how you end up with two people doing the same job getting paid very different amounts

So the best way to avoid this would be to do research and find out what that position is worth so you can ask for that amount? I honestly.. just want a job allowing me to make 50k or more. I know that sounds like a little but its what I would feel comfortable on for now. I feel like I have no idea how much anything is worth or how much even I am worth.

some people advocate not revealing your current salary, at some firms this is a red flag and can lead to you being dropped from the process - certainly trying to initially just state a target salary or range can be useful

Because they figure that if you know the industry than you know what salary you should expect.

For example I know exactly what a new law grad should expect to be offered from a firm, depending on what law school they went to, what law firm they are applying to, and what type of law they will be working.

The usual opening range (unless you went to an ivy league) is $50k to $100k.

They don't need to post that. Its kinda of a shit test that if newbs fail, then they "don't belong" there.

Kinda like the guy that walks into the Ferrari store to buy a car usually doesn't need to ask the price.

It drives me insane that they don't just post how much it will be. It's a waste of time for a lot of people to go through the effort of applying for jobs etc. Only to discover the pay is less than what you currently make. Going through interviews is a time consuming process.

same situation in the UK, but grads at top city firms 'magic circle' etc.. will still get silly salaries even if plenty of law grads won't actually join the profession

fact is there is still competition for the top students from top schools and the pay reflects this
