In community college right now in a chemical engineering program thinking of switching to electrical engineering. What do you guys think? Also is it worth doing the full 4 years if i go with EE? Supposedly you can get good jobs in that field(80k+) with just an associates.

I'd say EE but both are good and just as viable for the future.

Just know that EE and ME are the most general of all engineering and have a lot of specialties.

EE with grad degree making 80 now at 25. If you want to make that with an associates, join the IBEW. I'm an engineer though, but it isn't my only income.

By CE, you mean Civil or Computer? Civil fuck no, computer maybe. They are weird people though. Programming is a necessary skill in both areas.

Hey guys

I just finished high school and here are my options

Engineering with commerce (I will major in finance for commerce)
Commerce with arts majoring in psychology
Commerce
Engineering

All of these will be at the same uni which is a 'good' uni and does get jobs in the real world (know people that went there and work at investment banks and did engineering and/or commerce)

Or, I go to a mid tier uni and do chemical

I'm leaning towards commerce with engineering but I'm just concerned with the workload. I assume it would be difficult doing 2 degrees at once

You can apply after one year of college, I believe. And also, most all of the entry level positions require a bachelors, even the non union clerks. I don't know of any associates co-op minus working in the union.

Truth be told, it's a comfortable life, but a good amount of the work is boring. Company is so big that there is a lot of fat so most of the job is bureaucratic. If that's for you, go for it, but I am looking at different places. FYI.

All I can submit to this thread is that I graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering, and I make $50k a year (before taxes) at a corn milling company that makes maltodextrin and I wish I would have became an Electrical Engineer and joined a union. 25 year old kid I work with makes almost twice as much as I do, he runs wires, installs mcc buckets and PLC's and enjoys what he does. I'm just a bitch chemist whose job could be done by someone making $10 an hour.

Im the only person I know that graduated with a CE degree that actually has a job and I'm 28, the rest of them work in jobs not related to their field.

Yeah I heard that the job is really easy and uninteresting. I honestly don't mind because Im pretty lazy and the pay is good. Also I won't be fucked if i dislike it because i can always finish the bachelors and have a whole array of options.

The downturn in oil and gas dumped thousands of Chem Es into the job market. Commodity chemicals get more consolidated every year. Chem E is very focused compared to EE or Mech E. Everyone who makes something needs EEs and Mech Es.

Many people underestimate the work load of any engineering curriculum. Its pretty much damn impossible to get a double degree if you're pursuing any engineering degree. I'm a junior MechE right now that breezed through high school, and can confirm engineering is fucking hard. Only people that like the field make it through. The work load is intense and the exams are stressful. I've seen many waltz in as freshman doing engineering so they can "get a job" or get a good initial income.. and they always get weeded out by sophomore year. I know this sounds cheesy, but major in something you are interested in.

Company mentioned: Grain Processing Corporation.

EE works through Davenport Electric Contract Company. I don't know if he got his degree after he started working there, but he's Union and has a degree in EE from Northwestern. I asked him once what he was doing working at such a shitty factory (this place hasn't been updated since the early 70's), he said he's happy working for his company and makes good money.
