My father is starting to listen to Jim Cramer on sattelite radio and watch him on tv. How do I save him from financial ruin? He just wants a common sense narrative he can believe in.

Back when I used the virtual stock exchange website as an interesting activity I used to watch Cramer pretty often. I did pretty well I thought. Even if the advice isn't that reliable, at least then it kept me thinking and curious and I made more good decisions than bad.

Too bad it was the virtual stock exchange and I made $0 off it.

If hes thinking of getting into stock trading then hes doing the right thing. Its a massive field. Also, the one tip he gave my ears perked up to was for Nappa auto parts, a few days later it jumped waay up.

He not someone to follow like Jesus but a voice in the financial world. Terms, lingo, styles etc, theres a lot to learn.

Cramer's not stupid, but he's not giving long term investment advice. He's just gives a good narrative to recent trends on the street.

Cramer is basically like an investment bank analyst report. He might be correct about what will happen in the next 3 months, but no really give a shit about anything past that.

Your dad could do worse. Try to get him to diversify, not take on too much risk, and not to trade frequently. Those three things can mitigate almost all of the damage done from following Cramer.

Don't worry, he's not going to lose all his money. He's just going to make sub-optimal returns vs. an index fund.

tell him it is great that he has found an interest in finance but not to be one of those balding men going through a mid life crisis, instruct him to do what it takes to have the remotest chance of beating the market as opposed to following some huxter and his empty platitudes

start trading paper and make records of how successful cramer is, share your research with him to coax him into doing some research of his own, make his own inferences and see how they play out before he actually starts putting money on anything risky
