Do you live below your means, /biz/?

I make about the poverty line in money, and I'm trying to save up enough money for a modest house.

Any advice?

I pretty much live like every poor uni student even tho im not really poor. You just need to realise that materialism is not gonna make you happy.

Just cut out expensive items that you dont really use, I dont spend money on TV and mobile service since TV can be watched online and you can use Nextplus or something like that and get free text/calls etc when you have wifi.

Well, I make $24K a year, I hardly make minimum wage until they raise minimum wage and ruin my life.

The advice is really useful, though, not trying to player hate.

No problem - I wasn't trying to say you were at minimum wage or slam your earnings. But, if someone at min. wage can do something, you should feel positive that you can too.

Sometimes I wish I was starting out again, it'd be exciting to go balls-to-the-wall for FIRE.

40+ hours (usually maxes out at 48, but it's always in excess of 40 unless I get sick)
I make $12 an hour or thereabouts.

absolutely after actually making $$ at work saving $$ by reducing living costs is the best way to force multiply your $$

another good way is investing smart and buying a house is usually NOT the way to go if you want to live cheaply

Well, living at home with parents would be cheaper than owning a home, but isn't renting an apartment just burning money for no value AND living more expensively than a small house is after the mortgage is done with?

so you make peanuts and are going to pay off a mortgage in what 15 20 30 years ?

look into cost of owning a house vs it appreciating and you selling for a profit, painting roofing repairs lawns all that stuff costs a boatload of $$

and are you going to live in 1 place for that long ?

and if you live in cheaper apartments no way in hell can you match that with a cheaper house payment unless you're out in the boonies and apartments can move easier than selling a house

get a cheap apartment and save extra $$

Actually, on average in the US, buying is better than renting. But, it all depends on your area.

Buying an apartment is cheaper than renting in some cities in Denmark. I dont know what it will cost in the states but you should be able to calculate that (its probably not cheaper when you are min wage and alone).

Renting is not throwing money out since you get a place to stay + you can move away for a better job without having to sell a house, but yeah you are not building equity.

Personally I love having my own place but i also no where im gonna live for the next 10+ years.

button line: You need to increase your wage
