my point still stands.
if you want a better one, there's over 700 pokemon but i still cosplayed pikachu because its the most recognizable cosplay and as much as you want to bitch about "attention whores", the only way you're gonna get well known in the cosmunity is to have your cosplays spread around, and unless you cosplayed an incredibly hard to pull off side character/outfit and did it well, your side and background character cosplays aren't going to get as much attention and won't get spread around as much as the ones of main characters and main outfits because that's what people recognize and that's what people are going to want to take pictures of.
