Isn't this entirely down to personal preference?

The dark metal version is probably more rust resistant than the normal version (assuming it's just bare shiny steel).

Harbor Freight throatless shears are fine for up to 16 ga. I have used them mostly to cut soft aluminum and lighter gauges. They still ain't cheap at $128 (using a 20% off coupon) but you will spend x6 or more for real Beverly shears.

OP will need to decide how much future metal working he will do. As a prop maker I don't see the point of this project. Or rather I don't see the point for his skill level. Its one thing if you are a skilled metal worker and have all the tools. He should do a dry run with plastic and then see if he wants to do metal.

A decent corded hand jig saw and more importantly a quality metal cutting blades (I like Bosch, you know ze Germans make good stuff) with plenty of cutting oil will make short work of sheet steel. I cut mine on a saw horse just like cutting plywood. Just don't get too crazy on the curves, go slow on curves and for Gods sake wear eye protection.

The antiqued epic armory stuff does have an overall better look though and resists rusting more than the shiny one.

How the hell do you not know what a bad cosplay looks like? That's like saying you don't know what bad furniture or bad paintings look like. Having an eye for craftsmanship isn't hard to acquire. Accuracy to source material, craftsmanship, and translation to real world aesthetics all play a part in how good a cosplay is.

I've been trying to figure out how to get ahold of red lenses, or a way to tint the lenses in a gas mask and I can't find anything. Does anyone have any ideas for an end result to pic related from clear lenses? They have to remain transparent so I can see. Thanks guys.

It' a tinted outsert. From my understanding, all US military respirators will have two (sets of) outserts, one clear meant purely to improve the longevity of the mask, and one tinted to allow light reduction without compromising a seal. Actually, if you seriously did try to tint the main visor of an MCU mask, it'd probably melt or something, as the main lens is soft rubber. So there's that for random shit learned today.

Hi OP, I do some custom masks and motorcycle helmets If you want red lenses you have 2 options. well there is a 3rd option i'll explain last.

#1: It the lens is removable you can replace them with colored lexan or other Plexiglass that can be bought in sheets. This works best for flat lenses as you don't have to heat and mold it. You will have to cut it to shape and the plastic might not be optically correct or have artifacts in it. to cut it you will need to keep the protective plastic cover on and score the plastic sheet in the pattern that is slightly larger than the original. You can use a thin saw then a very fine sand paper to smooth the edges to take off the saw marks and excess plastic.

#2: Rub on mylar tint. there are many kinds and suppliers if there is an auto shop that does custom tint in your home town call them up and see if they have red or mirrored red. This is good on actual glass, some older gas masks and aviator goggles use glass lenses and the tint will adhere nicely. you have to clean and prep the surface then smooth the tint onto the lens to get out the air bubbles. There is a small selection that will adhere to plastic and polycarbonate lenses but it normally has to be special ordered.

#3: The 3rd method requires a lens with an anti fog coating. most motorcycle face shields have a thin plastic coating on the inside that resists fogging from your breath and body heat. This coating can be tinted using normal fabric store liquid RIT dye. prep your dye pot and submerge the lens in the dye bath for a few seconds. this will lightly tint the anti fog coating. use a dark red dye and repeat the process 2 or 3 times to get a transparent colored lens.

When I did my Umbrella corp soldier, I didn't use red I actually used the window tint adhesive paper and stuck them on the lenses. makes a great eye protection though from the sun

My fallout cosplay, I ordered some coveralls that were the best shade of blue I could find. They also looked pretty authentic to actual vault suit material that you see in game. (They claim it's leather in game text/lore but that shit doesn't look leather at all)

It isn't denim exactly, though it is 100% cotton. But it is a bit thicker but also softer than denim.

I'm in the same position right now. Looking for a male or female cosplay idea on beginners lvl craftmenship wise, BUT with the addition that the character should be someone who is underrepresented in terms of cosplaying.

Was thinking about one with a seifuku, but I can't think of too many with a good recognition value while considering the addition.

I personally think Kaneki Ken is a good choice if you know how to sew(depending of the attire you don't even need to), his mask is easily found anywhere but if you don't want to spend money on it you can try to make it yourself(not that easy depending of the materials). And for females seifuku is the most viable, but then again if you can sew or have access to someone who knows how to, the range of outfits gets bigger.

There's a closet cosplay thread and a fashionable manga/anime thread, you could look at those.
Otherwise, I'd say any characters that have normal clothes. Spike from Cowboy Bebop, Ash from Pokemon, Desmond from AC can all be done with the help of any normalfag shop. Seifuku is a great idea, as is any sort of vaguely recognisable uniform. People might not know what you are but they'll know what you're going for (eg the might not know you're waitress Mikuru but they will know you are a waitress).
Pokemon gijinka tend to be pretty easy too, especially if you go for the more well-known ones. If you want something immaculate go for something else, but they're good as a last resort costume (cut out a tail, paint it, wear clothes in that colour scheme. You might very well look like shit, but you won't look shittier than everyone else.)
Things like Free!, Yowapeda, Kuro no Basket, some of the outfits from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki Kun and pretty much any casual outfit from Sailor Moon can be bought and/or assembled in about twenty minutes flat.

You can try the Love Live! school uniform since that seems to be the most popular school-based show in 2014-2015.
Before that there was K-On! and Suzumiya Haruhi uniforms.

You can also try the Attack on Titan basic outfit (cropped jacket, finding proper base shirts and pants, practice making a boot cover). Omit all of the extra belts and straps.
