The only good part about this "cosplay" is the clean paint job on the symbol. We see this all the time, but being hot or having a winning smile won't redeem your cosplay if it's bad. You'll still be hot, but you won't be a good cosplayer.

People like this are why MSPA cosplayers have a bad reputation. They used cheap yoga trousers without the string and used a garbage wig. The top is just generally poorly made and the bump it made in the trousers looks terrible. Such a shame.

A handful of BNF hamsteaks are into SU now but there's not many. Most of the "recognizable" SU cosplayers like Hanari are more infamous than famous.

There's well known cosplayers that people seem to follow in most fandoms, honestly. It's just, they dont have the same 'bnf idolization' thing that Homestuck really radiates. I mean sure, you get some young kids who do the idolizing shit (usually ex-homestucks), but it just doesn't seem to be noticeably to the same extent that happens over here.

I'm actually a little happy that the fandom is calming down now. A few years ago anyone that could throw together a semi-decent godtier john thought they were the best thing since sliced bread. And I know some people are shit at taking compliments, but when you tell some 17 year old their Zillyhoo is well made, the response shouldn't be a smug 'yeah' as they walk away.
I don't miss that. I don't miss the attitude some many mediocre Homestuck cosplayers had two years ago.
We've been humbled, and I like that I can now chitchat with so many more people and be met with friendly discussion rather than smug shittalking.

Idk I think there's quite a few spot on cosplays, a lot of them just aren't super impressive becuase as stated upthread we've seen it before and often it's just not very challenging costumes.

With that said, I've yet to see Virulentmalapropisms and Periodicallypapaya not be spot on as Rose and Kanaya.

As far as 10/10 cosplays, I've seen a few but they're kinda hard to come by, it's like the cosplayers have a really hard time keeping stuff clean

I always see these square sort of horns and I really hate them? I see people making square horns for canon trolls a lot and i really don't understand why. Even if the outfit is fine I see boxy horns and it just destroys it for me.

She was voted off the list partially due to lack of photos, but I recieved an email from her asking that I kept her off the list if she arose as a suggestion again. Her name in the context of the list pretty much always lead to some pretty agressive debates with a small number of anons being either viciously against- or for her. I can't remember exactly what she said because she was very sweet and polite about it but my stance was always that her cosplays WERE great, there just wasn't enough content (and what was was hard to find on her blog) to warrant her being on a list of "here are some cosplayers you should follow if you like cosplay".

But yeah, photos are super important. That's why I personally thought Fromgilbowithawesome should be on it, for example, but not Imploder.

How do people manage to get good photos time and time again? It seems like you have to be friends with a photographer or you're SOL. Most of my photos aren't great but I don't know how to fix that since it's not like I can take the pictures myself.

I just shove a camera in my friends hands in exchange for a coffee or a sandwich or something. You don't need to know a photographer, you just need to know someone with a camera. These days even cellphone cameras get you good pictures so worst case you can just put up a camera with a self timer.

I would also suggest learning a little about basic image composition. Pretty much no raw photo is very good so knowing how to crop, adjust light and colours is a life saver. Especially when you just do a shoot with a friend and they let you edit the photos yourself.

Framing and composition is way more important for cosplay photos than DSLR quality print. Most of those 10/10 cosplays above are shot in a way that tells some story or expresses an emotion.

My best advice is to learn photography and photoshop for yourself. If you know what to do then you just get a someone to actually hold the camera and direct them into where to take the shot. Review the photos, see what worked and what could use some tweaking and shoot again. From there it's pretty much photoshop work.

So, i used to be a regular poster here (would do tag dumps a lot and what not) and i stopped coming to CGL because i thought being here was really making me negative and and hurting myself by kind of making myself feel like i'm not going to be good enough (even though its super simple HS cosplay) and so i guess the question is, Should i even try? Is it worth it to even cosplay HS anymore?

The thought of cosplaying HS to conventions (seeing as most of them around me are anime cons) would be weird and almost uncomfortable.

I don't know when i will be back on but i wanted to pop in and ask, and also say that i kind of missed y'all. Anyway, have a nice day or night.

It might depend on the con, anon. Some cons like a few on the west coast or NYCC have moved on from Homestuck so you might be the odd man out. But like anons upthread mentioned, big anime ones like Katsucon and Otakon still draw huge crowds to the meetups even though they aren't the size they used to be. We're just a bunch of sandy bitches on CGL but everyone at-con is still as friendly as ever. I met a lot of my cosplay friends while wearing homestuck at anime cons, so don't feel weird about being out of place.

homestuck is still pretty big and has a large fan base even if its not as big as it was. on the east coast at least anime cons still draw significant amounts of hs cosplay.

Thank you both very much, its good to know that there is still people left into it. It helps that i'm sort of in the middle of Ota and Katsu, still it kind of stinks because i don't really have any con friends anymore (haven't really had a good con since 2012 so just stopped going) since i just gave up on cons. I'm glad you said that, and i have to say, the anons in the HSG threads are some of the most helpful anons on CGL. Seriously, people still give HS cosplayers shit and you all still give out some of the most detailed advice with bodypaint and more.

I've done full kids groups mostly, because 4 people is so much easier than trying to get all 12 trolls. Usually it just takes having a few good friends who you con with and just, matching up to who does who best.

The group's I've had most fun in was an Alpha kid group, and a Guardians group. Though, I've got at least a couple private shoots lined up for Youma for my garbage ships that I'm terribly excited about.

Usually I end up in a ragtag group of trolls, probably about 8/12? A few always evade us. Specifically good Zahhaks, more often than not.

Whenever somebody focuses over the top attention on a particular cosplayer I always assume it's smart vendetta (or selfpost but that's unlikely here). We were planning to have the headbands under the wigs. We actually have the horns on screws so we could do that.

There was a last minute issue with the base of the horns snapping off and we had to glue the horns back on to the headband. After that, they were stuck permanently onto the headband so we couldn't do the under-wig method.

Homestuck has a lot of good beginner costumes, just work with a pattern. There are fanmade tutorials and patterns that already exist specifically for John's God Tier hood, so it won't be hard to find.

I leave /o/ for a few minutes to brows /cgl/, missing my friends who were in to cosplay, and stumble across this damn photo again. Feels like I took this a century ago. That shot was completely on a whim, too, we were both blasting photos of eachother in quick succession, just dicking around. He was a good kid, and friend, wish we had never fallen out.

Did Hussie ever even finish that gigantic clusterfuck of a comic? God, I remember being so in to it that I actually made friends through it, and even moved up to Portland because of those friends being in the area (and more job prospects for truck driving). I never would have even really known about cosplaying if it weren't for hamsteak. I dunno if it's ironic or what, but I would probably still be a completely introverted shitpile working minimum wage jobs if it weren't for being in cosplaying groups with those people.

Sorry, just getting hit in the feels over here with nostalgia. Never thought I'd even relate that word to that comic. Life moves on, I guess, and some small part of me is happy to see other people still enjoying the weird ass society that comic has created.

Honestly, I tried the pattern tutorial when I was a baby homestuck and some of them just really over-complicated it for me. I had it easiest just sketching out the cape part of the hood on newspaper until I got something that fit over my head and looked how I wanted it to. Then just use chalk to draw the hood of a hoodie that fits well and extend the back of it into as long of a triangle shape you want.

A little goofy, but accepting of most people no matter their skill level, and I think that's kind of a good thing. There's a whole group of them, all from Ohio, and compared to the unsealed paint and babbystucks there, they always look pretty good.
I bet there's some shitty interpersonal drama or whatever- just about every community has it. But nothing real big. nothing CGL worthy.

Altogether the cosplays are decent but there are lots of wig issues in this group imo. Dirk's wig in particular is really underwhelming, especially considering what we know CBC can do with styling. I think JJ really suits Rose though and I'd love to see her do another outfit.

I've seen tons of it, particularly the horns. to varying levels people also have been using the dresses, vriska/aradiabot shirts, and the Terezi hoodie. Now that Terezi's cap has been made probably a lot more of that too to come. Admittedly I kinda wanna do a fun shoot with my terezi hoodie before I sell it off. I can't stand the lining of the hoodies. Using merchandise for cosplay is nothing new though, people used to always buy the shirt from Topatoco. Not just the kid ones but the troll tees too when they were released.

On the topic of bards, any tips on making the shoes? As shoecovers or something? Thanks, any good tutorials or guides on how to make shoecovers for lower shoes? All the tutorials I can find are for boots and more akin to socks. Or would it just be roughly the same? I just decided to take a look at my hood and I think that for one I might need to stuff it some more, and for two there's some detailing I should probably fix up, such as making a straight stitch along the edges to give it a more clean look, as well as adding in holes for the horns which I totally forgot about when I initially made it, lol.

She was a very well-known Homestuck fanartist back when the scene was really big. She had a kind of distinct style so people recognized her stuff. There was some controversy on tumblr about her because tumblr, but it was truly nothing that warranted all the shit she got. There were multiple blogs dedicated to keeping receipts on her behavior and talking shit about her. Even now there's people saying things like "I hope she didn't kill herself but she's still a piece of problematic trash don't forget that".
Fuck tumblr.

Wasn't it more of the fact that she was white, trying to cosplay a character that's "coded" or seen stereotypically as Asian? This, despite the fact that Damara is a grey skinned alien? the bigger problem is that on tumblr, people are either paragons of virtue or delegates of the great satan. There are no shades of grey or room for nuance. Only good or bad. Tumblr will put well-known folk and personalities so high up on a fucking pedestal to the point it starts becoming a spindle. Thus if one of those people says even the slightest things that is "problematic", slightly non-PC, or even downright offensive, the whole thing tips over and comes crashing down. And since Tumblr has set these people up as holy beings, instead of seeing a word out of place as a mistake that any normal person can make or even seeing it as a chance to politely tell that person what they have said might be insulting to some, the whole fucking thing comes collapses in the most horrific way possible with every special snowflake coming out of the woodwork with a torch to burn what's left and salt the earth.

Tumblr isn't a hivemind just like CGL isn't a hivemind. The witchhunts and callout bullshit is always instigated by one or two people (usually if they're butthurt over some post or have a vendetta). She haven't been active in the Homestuck fandom in a while if I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure the people who were attacking here were just the kind of people looking for something to be angry about and brew up a storm. But it seems to have started with her SU art.

And yeah, the comments about Damara were in the same context as those about white Garnet cosplayers are, and while I agree that Damara is pretty much just an offensive stereotype (and I wouldn't want to cosplay her myself for that reason) that's still... yeah.

NGL I'm really glad we haven't had much of a social justice debate in this fandom.

I'm sure we had stuff like this in the Homestuck fandom but considering that there's no voices or actual real life people to associate the characters with, and also considering all the trolls are one solid grey color, I feel like it's harder to make cases out of something. Contrast with SU where the gems have different colors and they have voice actresses to imagine when thinking of them.
