Is anyone else hesitant to buy a dream dress out of fear it will be rereleased?

I really want to buy Puppet Circus, but I feel like it's only a matter of time before it gets rereleased. I still will probably get it anyway since, unless it is a MTO, a rerelease of it would be an absolute bloodbath unlike anything the community has ever seen before and it would still be ridiculously expensive secondhand, anyway. I have the same thing with Elizabeth Bride of Death and AatP Gloria, too.

AP doesn't do rereleases of velvet prints because production is complicated and there is less profit. I don't forsee them rereleasing PC unless they are really desperate for money.

They will apparently never be able to rerelease some dresses, specifically the Imai Kira collaborations, because of licensing issues.

What you are describing is not your dream dress. You are wanting puppet circus because of the cost that goes with it and you think it is a status symbol. That is why you fear a rerelease that will change that. Dream dresses are not about how pricey they are. Which is why a rerelease should not matter besides that you could have paid retail.

As someone who owns PC, just go for it. As people have stated above, AP more than likely won't re-release it. Not to mention the dress is going on 10 years now, some people would be more than willing to pay the price just have the original old dress.

It's also possible with a re-release that something is different than the original dress, which once again would cause people to go for the original. After all when Holy Lantern was re-released they had a high waisted jsk instead of the zipper jsk.

My dream dress has been rereleased three times already and I couldn't be happier, because the more a dress is available the more ways you can see people coordinating it. Seeing how other girls wear my dream dress helps inspire me and pushes me to up my game to do the dress justice.

I think it also helps that the secondhand price has stayed consistently a little bit below retail despite being rereleased a bunch of times.

I don't care about it being a status symbol, it's been a dream dress since it was less than $500. You guys are jumping to some ridiculous conclusions on my motives based on the fact I'm worried about spending $1500~ on a dress only for it to be rereleased for a fifth of the price later on.

So why didn't you buy it then? If you weren't willing to spend $500 on it then you're not going to spend $1500 on it. And if the probability of a re-release is holding you back then you don't want it that bad.

Anon the chances of PC being rereleased are slightly lower than your odds of finding it for $5 at a Goodwill for many reasons. The velvet print thing, that it's a Kira Imai print/copyright issues, that it's old as fuck, has AP ever rereleased anything that old? A PC rerelease wouldn't remotely fit in with their current aesthetic. They would have to significantly alter the design, and the older version would retain most of its value. On top of that other rereleases haven't changed the prices all that much. Look at misty Sky, it's been rereleased 3 times and the OP is STILL going for $600+
Seriously, although overall "will they rerelease this expensive dress the day after I buy it?" is a valid concern, you've picked probably the one dress in the world that this is the LEAST concern.

They've rereleased older things, just not recently. They rereleased Country of Sweets and a couple other things from those days. I hope you're right, it's just that AP has become so rerelease happy these past few years and that is their most sought after dress. Out of curiosity, why would it being an Imai Kira collab be such an issue? Wouldn't they just need her approval?

It just depends on how much you budget and what you decide are dream dresses and how you want to get it. My Favorite Ribbon is a perfect example for me. This was the dress that essentially made me fall back in love with Lolita. I will never pay 2k for it and will always just admire it from afar. Now, I have a chance to get it with the upcoming reservation.

If youre worried about rereleases becoming a factor of getting a dress then you need to take a step back and reassess how you approach your collecting

Why is it that this fashion attracts people who probably shouldn't be buying relatively expensive, niche dresses? If $1500 is going to be such a huge expensive shouldn't you be worrying more about money for your living conditions and not about spending it frivolously on some fabric? I'm legitimately curious.

I think if you want something, buy it. No regrets. The longer you wait could either work for or against you. Maybe there will be a rerelease, maybe not. Almost nothing sold for retail or above retail on auctions back in the day. You could even get rare and sought after pieces for piss cheap because less people bothored with shopping service (they were fewer and more complicated in usability/communication) and most people just put up with being scalped on the sales comm later. Nowadays shopping services are much more comfortable to the point where everyone uses them. So you have to compete with a dozen (or more) of shopping services and don't forget the nouveau rich chinese. Lolita fashion has become more accessible and the target audience has widened, which means more demand for the already less available pieces = the prices raise.

A dream dress can be the Babyssb babydoll jsk from Kamikaze girls, and be super easy to get (for Lolita expensive standards), and if it makes you happy, that is all about it.

Second hand prices and re-printing is what killed collectionism in Yu-Gi-Oh cards, which later on killed the most fanbase, and what seems to be killing MtG for some fans.

MtG producers had to stop re-printing in order to prevent the loss of fans.

Another interesting issue is the appereance of indie brands and really cheap dresses that can become dream dresses regardless of price. I wonder if AP has realized of the increasing competence (with such cheaper prices), and has decided to produce more MTOs.

Anyway, answering your question:
I'm not scared, but I would be cautious when buying a very expensive dress, and prioritize how happy it makes me over the status symbol/investment value of it.

I would not buy a dress just because it seemed an investment. For me, that is risky and could become a mistake, and is not for the love of the style, is just collectionism.

I don't know why you would think AP would release PC again. It doesn't fit with their current aesthetic, it's a velvet print with copyrighted artwork and it's not that popular. There is a loyal circle of Puppet Circus-fans who will pay out of their ass for it and if a dress once hits a certain price on auctions it will be priced as such.
It's well known for being expensive but not popular enough for a rerelease. If a dress were to be rereleased it would be Chocolate Rosette, Misty Sky or Romantic Rose Letter.

Way back in the day stuff held value on the western market because it was hard to get, but that meant you could sell average pieces in good condition for not that much below cost. There were not dresses going for $1,000+. In Japan, there was no import-related scarcity. The first few highly coveted dresses that went for above retail were a really big deal, and they went for less than half what Puppet Circus goes for.

this mentality confuses me so much, even if you're financially able that's still a pretty big commitment to make for anything that isn't essential.

That being said: OP, I think you just need to decide if it's truly a dream dress for you. If it is, you won't regret buying it, even if it is rereleased. (but as others have said, it's extremely unlikely that it will be)

Its the same as the lolita market, depending on which release/year and cut, and color a dress is, it could go for higher or lower. Look at Misty sky, Sugary Carnival (when it was first released and when it got re-release, damn dress never went down in price until now), Melty Berry Princess, even Holy Lantern isn't going down in price even though we have MTO right now. Some people want the original year a certain dress came out, others want the re-release year instead, so depending which has demand, the price will reflect that.

Normal people in decent financial situations still consider $1500 a lot. It isn't being a poorfag or spending money you shouldn't, it's valuing your money and not being careless with it. $1500 is the partial cost of a used car, and in some places is rent or a mortgage payment. That kinda takes precedence for any dream dress. That anon is either rich/well-to-do and an asshole about it or someone with a really fucked up understanding of personal finances and priorities. A personal friend of mine talked Imai Kira during the PMX personally about how she feels on re-releasing her prints and is okay with it and wants to do it. Idk why AP doesn't want to release her prints like CTP. Maybe AP is scared to invest into printing and re-releasing a old print and not enough people buy them. Like Honey Cakes will never get a release, it never sold well and it took awhile to get them off the hangers and a lot of people send emails for the demand too. AP will just release what they want no matter how much we want, unless the chinese lolitas demand the prints because god knows AP is willing to make MTO and re-releases for their demand.

On another note, I can second what Imai Kira said. And honestly I think if enough people bothered AP about CTP, there'd be somewhat of a chance of it getting re-released or MTO. Especially if the chinese lolitas went on another email campaign. At this point since no way has tried, we'll never know.

CTP was released at the possible worst time and with a close to $750 price, including SS fees.

I don't think it's so much that AP doesn't care but they don't really look at the secondhand sales unless a huge group directs them otherwise. Even then, they still said no to a Misty Sky MTO so who knows how they decide what gets released or not.

CTP might be that like some sort of wish fulfillment in a way. Sort of like how toy collectors are now buying childhood toys since they can now afford to pay for it

Basic dresses that sell for $50 now would sell for $200 then. It's just that coveted pieces sell for more as there is more competition now and lots of rich Chinese lolitas who will pay anything. Oh, just realised that you seem to be talking about the Japanese market and I meant Western. But shopping services back then were much pricier and with the strong yen, things were still a good 30-50% more than retail all up.

Are you kidding? Holy Lantern sold like hotcakes. The first release day a lot of the shipment was delayed due to quality issues, so there was very little stock. The second shipment also went fast.

I find it incredulous that people who obviously shouldn't be affording these dresses are throwing their money at brand companies anyway. Why is it that suggesting NOT to buy an expensive fucking dress is met with comments like, "You sound spoilt and sheltered"? Is this some weird entitlement or something?

While $1500 won't get you a 2BR in most of the high-commerce areas in the US (major CA cities, NY, etc) even the laziest glance at craigslist will tell you $1500 is normal for a lot of major cities (see: Raleigh, Houston, even some locations in Boston) and heinously expensive for more backwater areas.

I live in one of richest states in the country in a really nice town that has a little Ivy and average income well above the national average. You can easily find a nice two bedroom here for $1500. This is far from the only town like this.
