I can't stand when some people say how great they are for doing free Photoshoots, yet they only take pictures of famous cosplayers. Grwat so the shoots are free, bur they wont take any photos. I can't stand the fake, we are so nice act.

Did you arrange with good ones ahead of time or just show up and hope to run across people? If it was the former who did you work with? If it was the latter, AX had 90,000 people at it and good luck with that. It's kind of like this (numbers are arbitrary):

10 photographers. 1 is good. 1 is great. The other 8 are meh to average. If you have 100 that means you should have 10 good, 10 great, 80 meh/average. 1000 photographers and 100 good, 100 great, 800 meh/average. California has a lot of photographers in general but not all of them are good.

Jason Laboy thinks he's hot shit. He did a rooftop shoot that he invited 40+ cosplayers to during NYCC. The only problem is that he showed up late and had until 9:15 to shoot. He only managed to shoot like 10 people lol All those cosplayers were so mad. Over promise and under deliver. Oh I'm staff photographer at Cosplay Culture, but it you wanna be in the mag book a shoot with me even though I'm press. Why is press charging for photos at a con?

Lucas and Creative Edge. Every Britfag will say the same. Creepy fuckers who use cosplay as a source of free models to dupe into getting naked for them. They both routinely scam and sell out their friends to make a quick buck. Their photos are below average with clumsy attempts at saving them with photoshop. There have been loads of independent reports of both of them touching cosplayers inappropriately and Lucas was even investigated by the police for molesting someone.

Lemon-ikon - We call him Chunks due to the incredibly unfortunate skin condition that he never seems to treat. He posts the saddest things on fb and equally sad photos.

Everyone in the Secret Texas Cosplay Photographers Group - Mineralblu and the fifty other fat greasy asian dudes who think they are god's gift to cosplay because they are asian. All of their photos look alike and nearly every single one of them asked me to do sexy shots or tried to pose me so my tits would fall out of my top.

Vargarth - Has a hot girlfriend so he suddenly thinks he's something. He's really REALLY bad at photos, plus he has no idea how to tell anyone to pose. He grabbed my friends ass when we were trying to get away from him.

Anna Fisher - Like the op said she's annoying. I had some photos taken at dragon con and she never finished them. When I emailed to ask how she was doing she sent back some nasty note about how her work was about her and not me and that I should feel lucky that she even stopped when I said hello to her.

The Penguin Guy - no idea what his real name is I threw his card away. Creepy. As. Fuck.

I don't stick to cute/pretty/hot people but I do work with people who put effort in their cos. And by effort I mean I won't have to sit in photoshop fixing things they could have fixed beforehand (makeup, hair, an untied shoelace or some shit). Stuff like a stain on a cape or a exposed clasp/pin to hold something together I could probably fix (depending on the effort it'd have to take). But it'd be better to just skip that photo altogether.

It means she's wearing the corset wrong. While you're tightening up your corset you should reach your hand into the top and scoop your boobs and side fat towards the middle. You can get that crease whether you're fat or skinny, big tits or flat, by being stupid and just smashing everything into the corset without rearranging yourself properly. Richard was a normal, friendly person at conventions and other events. He was a people person and even though he didn't shoot much in recent years people still liked him. This is the product of people not giving a shit. You can have all the skill in the world but if you don't give a shit to produce something good you aren't going to. If you had put those photographers in front of something they cared about you would have gotten good results. Likewise you see some passionate kid working on a shoestring budget and he makes something interesting, although probably technically lacking due to his lack of funds. You can be damn sure people will, if they have the money, buy better equipment.

Why waste time begging a 'cosplay photographer' for photos when you can take your own photos. A decent camera is pretty affordable now and with creative cropping you can take some really awesome photos by just using friends and planning things before hand.

I am an oldfag and we used to not have so many 'photographers' to work with so we had to just learn to take our own photos and it is so much more fun. Pic semi related. We always do crazy shit like this. All those asian cosplayer expectation vs realist shots that were trending a while ago are great examples of how to just take your own great shots that turn out better then the same boring glamour shot taken by the $1000 + camera.

I think the appeal of a cosplay photographer is the possibility that photographer actually knows what they're doing to achieve something you can't just pull off with a shot and photoshop.

Mind you, great photographers can exist with cheapo bodies. You make a great great point with the pic you posted. But you'd be surprised by the reality of how easy it is to screw up that kind of shot and make a botched bootleg looking job.

Hint: a lot of it is in the lighting.

Both of these. There's so much that can be done for real and it always looks better than relying on photoshop. A lot can be achieved on a small budget. But also you do need to put some effort into knowing what you're doing or it'll look terrible.

I feel like if people put as much time into learning how to actually light and frame well as they spend learning how to photoshop, the average quality of cosplay photos would sky rocket ten fold. If anything it's a bit quicker to learn how to light well than shop well.

I have come to realize that you can be a great cosplayer and a terrible photographer or a great photographer and a terrible cosplayer. Sometimes it's both, but it doesn't come by just doing it, there's some learning involved.

Yeah, a good cosplayer will already intuitively know what the other cosplayer will want shot, but without the knowledge of how to use a flash or understanding on lighting you'll be quick to see why it's not as easy as picking up a camera and shooting.

Okay, so an external flash with a bluer white balance was used in >>8685473 . Great. What focal length was used? What were the camera's settings? What were the flash's settings?

In the expectation, the background is darker where in reality the room is fairly illuminated. Do you know how to turn daylight into night?

The sword is pretty blurry so the depth of field isn't f/22 wide.

This all isn't terribly complicated after some practice. But definitely not something you can just do on your own and expect it to come out the way you wanted. The time to pull the shot off in photoshop vs. getting the shot right is EXTREMELY significant (I'm talking a fraction of a second vs. hours in photoshop). As we all know, we don't have all the time in the world to produce an image.

I get what you're saying but sometimes it's not that easy. It's hard to explain since social dynamics get complicated. Don't get me wrong, I'd personally say "Wow, if this is true then I am disappointed" but when you work with people who would defend him and they're your friends or this and that or some other weird factor, it gets messy.

Maybe some of the guys who are silent just don't know what to say without coming off as them trying to cover their asses or making matters worse. It's bad enough their coworker/friend is now outed as one of the biggest creeps. What can they do besides leave them behind and talk about the matter privately?

But that's as much as I can hypothesize.

Igoring the name and just judging the casting, this is probably the perfect way of getting a shot that you want that inspires you. Sometimes I just want to shoot a certain series and have no real interest in anything else, so I'd ask around or say "Man, I wanna shoot X".

You're right for the most part. But we don't know certain people's obligations or limitations and why they're avoiding the situation. Maybe some of them prefer to be private. Or maybe they know that if they say they're not involved people will try to break down their statements as false information.

Like I said, I wouldn't have trouble saying "I'm not part of it." But you have to imagine what some of them may be thinking about in regards to their position in all of this. Maybe it's just agreed upon all Cosplay Photographers that it's just better to cut out Richard Bui and just move forward.

Except none of us are photographers and we did just pick up cameras and learned along the way. It is that easy if you are willing to put in some time. Photography skill isn't something you have to be born with. A lot of cosplayers are self taught sewers so why not try hobby lvl photography? I say hobby because I acknowledge we are not producing technically perfect images. I understand professional photography takes years of practice but a lot of the stuff I see 'cosplay photographer' create are at the same lvl as our group so why not just learn yourself is my message to other cosplayers complaining about a lack of photographers willing to shoot them.

This guy is just an utter joke, all his models dropped his pervy ass ages ago and people are still making fun of his cosplay studio lessons. So many of his cosplayers he tried to get with have dropped him and moved on to better photographers leaving his salty ass like the fuckboy he is. He promotes his photography as being so great but his photos and logos are mediocre. I still remember when one of his friends bashed a photo he posted about how good it was and they were like its shit because you can't edit a photo and still leave stray hairs in front of the face and he was like it's a look I like and they're like its a look that won't sell the pic to anyone

honestly, she probably was wearing a push up bra and corset, and had many more folds than that, which is perfectly normal. Blame the abnormality on the photo editor, who edited out all other lines but one to try to make it look normal. (He should have edited out that line, too.)

I edit photos for a living, and a sure tell sign of an amateur is the armpits and hands. Cosplay photographers often neglect these areas because everyone is just looking at cleavage and face. But the incongruity if a smooth face and lumpy armpits and veiny mottled hands has always been hilarious for me.
