Hey anon
I've been doing theater for years and I'm getting my degree in theater arts. I've been wanting to audition for some voice acting roles for Funimation and a few others but I've been told multiple times that studios won't give roles to people who are active in the cosplay community.

Does anyone have any experience here? It sounds like a big sack of crap to me, but the acting business can be weird.

It sounds like someone doesn't want competition. Cosplayers do voice acting all the time. Sometimes voice actors do cosplay.

Seriously, if you're going to let rumors like that stop you, don't try to become an actor. You're in for a world of disappointment.

Studios want actors, not fans. From my experience, you should cut down on cosplay and/or not mention it at all when auditioning or working (though the latter should go with out saying.)

Seriously! Don't just try to voice act for one studio; or pigeon hole yourself into the small category of just voice acting for anime, or just voice acting doe that matter. Eric Vale says it best in his panels: wanting to do only voice work is like being a chef, but ONLY willing to make spaghetti with red sauce. Can it be done? Sure, but the odds are obviously against you. You're a theatre major, you should do some live action to ACTUALLY make ends meet. Personally, that's what I'm doing; I'm going to start fluffing my resume soon when my new computer comes in, progress to radio work, and move afterwords to local city and get involved in the theatre scene or improv troupes (and pray to kamisama that the former is solely union like where I'm at now). Then, move to where the work is (and has less competition). You should a path similar to that, if you're not already. But, I'm digressing.
If for some reason you HAVE to do just voice, don't just limit yourself to FUNi (especially some they're slipping these days). If your going to DFW, open yourself to Sentai and other work, like radio and vidja. Hell, RT is in Austin, and they hire outside actors occasionally. Look at what is nearby.

It's ok to be a fan but your ability to cosplay has nothing on your skills as a voice actor. If you want to be a voice actor then hit the theater instead of the sewing machine

Who ever told you that is a dick/ignorant, because there are a lot of voice actors who cosplay at conventions. Caitlin Glass has, Chris Bevins, Jessica Calvello, Talisin Jaffe, Matt Mercer.

The common denominator is that they are REALLY fucking good at their jobs and probably easy to work with. Get some acting experience, become goodnat your craft, and audition. If you bring up cosplaying right off the bat it may make things harder, but not because you cosplay. It's because of the fact that it groups you with other anime fans, who probably don't have the best reputation.

They may think you care more about being a con guest than acting, or that as a fan, you're one of those people that think you know more than the director.

If you are a good actor and pleasant to work with, nobody will blink an eye if you cosplay.

But seriously, do some theater because stage work is ridiculously awesome and you get to wear costumes.

Seconding the point about anime fans being red flags. The studios want people who are talented and professional, and their image of anime fans- which is not entirely incorrect- is a squealing weaboo with a Naruto headband and BO. Don't mention it right off the bat.
Also, get experience. Do everything possible to make yourself more experienced and capable. You'll get a good reputation and people will be much more likely to want to work with you.

I've been in the convention industry for 10+ years so I hear a lot of voice actors in their offtime. Funimation wants people with theater or stage experience. Anime fans are not a red flag, but a lack of professionalism and direction generally are. Do you have a demo tape yet? Do you have a good microphone (or access) to one to do a demo tape?

Also, heads up. VA work is about acting, not voices. Find your natural ranges and comfortable characters and then LIVE in them. Funimation is good if you live in Texas, but there's more work in LA, Canada, and to a certain degree NY.

Is there even a point to demo tapes? I know normally they're crucial, but fans must email them to directors daily and if you are local, you would audition live anyway?

I tend to go to VA panels with guys who voice mostly western cartoons versus anime, but their advice is always "be an actor first and foremost." Also they definitely believe in improv and doing some stage performance in general just to benefit their vocal work.

I have the situation that I'm gradually considering switching my career to voicework, because I discovered at my last job that I may have the chops for it. Thankfully I don't act like a weeaboo, so the only challenge is being taken seriously without the acting background.

It was a publicity stunt. No one would have given a shit about the Super Sonico dub otherwise

Voice actors will sometimes cosplay their characters but they didn't start out that way. All have acting backgrounds.

The anons talking about recording demos are well intentioned but judging by how you're seeking advice on 4chan and your overall lack of knowledge of the VA industry you probably are not demo ready yet, and you seriously should NOT try to record and compile your own demo

Get a private VA teacher or go to a studio and take group classes, if there aren't any in your area there are a ton of resources online for aspiring voice actors.

It is not the kind of industry you should just dive into. Good luck, anon!

Keep in mind that you only have one chance to make a first impression and if you show up to an audition in cosplay and acting like a total weeaboo fan girl you will be guaranteed to be put on a shit list. These people are running a business and want to work with people who can act in a professional manner. And they don't care how big a fan you are if you can't contribute anything worthwhile to the project.
