I'll start. I keep 50 gallons of jugged water and about 30 milk crates of dry and canned goods. I rotate these into my regular diet and buy more as I use them.

Depends greatly on where you live. Here in MA, cans are between a dollar and four dollars. In the south however, cans are between 50 cents and 1.50 The water is about a dollar a gallon. You can always build your supply gradually. I recommend milk crates for space-efficient storage- you can stack them high or put them under your bed, use them as a table if you put a board over them, etc. and of course they also fit 4 gallons of water like a glove

My regular stores of dry goods are enough to live off for about a month if I had to. I think it silly to stockpile food for some emergency that's never going to happen. Strikes me as kind of like an end of the world cult mentality, or some kind of OCD.

If you have a safeway near you, their in store water is 89 cents with their club price. But once you buy 10 gallons you get an E-coupon that you can activate for a month that lowers the price to 80 cents.

On /sci/ there used to be a guy who lived in florida and would keep his hamster cages underwater. Weird guy, interesting threads.

His area lost power for a week during some hurricane or another, and his neighbors started coming over to charge their cellphones because he had solar panels. At first they were nice, then they started acting like his electricity was communal property, and would bitch that he didn't want them in his living room at 3am charging laptops. Then some biker gang tried to steal his panels.

Honey and instant coffee for bartering.
One of the first things to go is going to be sugars, since they spoil so easily, and honey is getting expensive so I doubt people will buy a lot of it ahead of time.
Instant coffee keeps pretty well and will be another thing that runs out quickly.

Otherwise lots of bouillon cubes, spices, and dry goods like rice, grains, and beans.

grocery stores are typically very corporate or highly managed, so your chances of getting crates there are slim. three grocers ive been to wouldn't slap a price on some bones they were gonna throw away anyway because "its not in the system" check restaurants. go to the back door of any restaurant and say "hey can i speak to the supervisor" and ask for crates. they likely have too many of them.

I don't trust others to provide for me, simple as that. Sometimes it snows here, very severely, and shuts down transportation for days. If I didn't have this food in my house, I'd be very hungry. Hurricanes are a thing, as are other natural disasters. There's also a vague risk of political disturbances or since Montsano's crops are all literally the same species, a massive food shortage lasting up to a year due to disease or pestillence. Even if nothing happens, I rotate these foods into my regular diet so there's no money lost. It makes me feel safer to know that I have the things I need to keep me alive.

Actually, sugar is considered by most preppers to be one of the top 10 indefinitely good food items. It does not spoil, however it will lump/turn solid.. which is not a real problem. This is true for all forms.

Bouillon cubes will go bad quickly.

The only thing I have are lots of pickles and preserves made from veg that I've grown. I should really get some canned foods and water too but I lack the space for them.

I'm from England and I remember the fuel tanker strike that happened in the early 2000's. I think our supermarkets were only a few days from running out of food which is a scary thought.

No doubt something similar can happen again so it's better to be prepared.

Brooklyn. There are no hard times here. Biggest disaster we've had was Hurricane Sandy, and even though Manhattan lost power and low lying areas were flooded where I live didn't lose power or even internet.

Everything I need can be obtained within a short walk from my apartment. There are three supermarkets and countless greengrocers and butchers, not to mention restaurants in a half mile radius of where I live. I don't ever need to be stocked up on anything.

If a disaster big enough to shut down Brooklyn hit my guess is I'd be dead.

I live right on top of the San Andreas faultline, as in the fault goes right underneath my house. It'd be really stupid to not be at least a little prepared for when the big one comes. Need a lot of water saved up, especially since i have a lot of animals to keep watered during a time of disaster.

We get a lot of snow, but we're used to it. Two feet of snow won't clog the main roads for more than a couple of hours. We don't get hurricanes or earthquakes. And if Monsanto corn fails then there's always Monsnto wheat to fall back on.

Meanwhile here in NYC we've gone through a prepper SHTF wet dream a couple of times in the last 15 years and instead of roving zombie packs like in World War Z, people came together and helped one another. Not that I ever want to go through anything like 9/11 again but the community reaction was exactly the opposite of what you'd think, aside from a few rumors of arabs being attacked by vigilantes out in Queens or whatever.

Yet another reason why I am reluctant to leave this place even though it would be nice to have a yard where I can shoot at beer cans while naked and drunk.

Or when you live in an isolated place it's easy to become fearful that will happen to you. When you live in a place where you see thousands of people every day, and even see them pull together during tragedies (9-11, Sandy) you're much less fearful of your fellow man. And you've pretty much got no reason to be, unless your idea of fun is wandering around East New York at 4 in the morning.

Hell, during the blackout of 2003 I remember both the pizza place and the liquor store near me selling everything on IOUs they wrote down in the store, because their cash registers and credit card machines were down. People fired up charcoal grills on the sidewalk to cook whatever they had in their fridges before it went bad, and they were just giving it away to passers by. The whole city was a block party (admittedly a quiet, kinda dark one) for a few days. It was awesome.

I think when you live in the middle of nowhere you develop the fear that something big going down will bring out the worst in people. Live in the city and you actually see the opposite. (Of course I wouldn't want to have been here in the 1970's. Timing is everything).

Just look at the picture. It literally points out which parts are fat and what is actually muscle. In case you can't see the arrows the fat is in white and the quadriceps muscle is the darker part. The 74-year-old sedentary man has basically no muscle and is in poor health.
