I'm surprised you're so strongly against this. There's always a chance that a Kickstarter will fall through, or that the person running the campaign will take the money and run. I think it's a pretty low chance, in this case. If you were starting a similar business, would you really rather take out a $10-$100k loan rather than take pre-orders or run a Kickstarter? Or would you instead accept the higher cost of doing small production runs until you can scale up your business? You can call it "cyberbegging", but of the two Kickstarters I've pledged before, I received exactly what I wanted, and it only makes sense from the other side, since running a Kickstarter is basically zero risk.
Are you opposed to spending more than ~$40 on a chef's knife in general, or is there some particular reason you think this one is a bad deal?
