I hear instant ramen in Japan is way better than the instant ramen that's sold elsewhere. Why is that?

Also, any advice as to what Japanese instant ramen to get at an import shop?

Yes, the instant ramen in nihon is better because nihon is superior in every way - food, culture, people - so it is only natural that their domestic products would be of a much more sugoi standard.

Noodles might be a little better, or they'll come with more than just a simple broth packet: dried veg and egg, some flavourful oil or fish sauce, little things like that.

If you can get Shin Ramyun Black then that'll be fairly indicative.

Because it was invented in Japan. I had some Nissin instant ramen and it had bits of egg and other stuff in it. It was definitely better than the Nissin we have here. Just go to a Japanese supermarket and try it, they're bretty gud

The ramen itself isn´t better. Probably only the packaging. In Japan, even if the water is steaming hot, you can still hold the cup with no problem.

The only major differences will be the localized taste. In Japan they will have the traditional, seafood, chili tomato, sio, and curry. Other countries will have flavors customized for the local public.

Don´t waste your money on imports of this type of food because the industrialized process in which it is done is usually just copied from the source. Now drop your chopsticks and get a fork.
