Get a slow cooker. One whole chicken on a bed of onions and some squashed garlic, no liquid, low for 10 hours. Freeze the extra, save the bones to make stock, freeze the liquid it puts out. Same with pork shoulder ($8 for 10 lbs) but add a can of beer or beef stock.
The most expensive things you will buy are always going to be spices. This is basic as shit, since you sound basic.
