Any professional chefs here? I always loved cooking but never thought of turning it into a career as I have no idea what the prospects and posibilities are. I am doing my college course in Administration and IT with Digital Communications but now seriously started to consider doing a cooking course next year.

tl;dr is it worth become a professional chef?

No. It's one of the lowest paid and most stressful jobs there is and if you love cooking it will take all the fun out of it. It's a job you get when you can't find a proper job due to lack of education or being an immigrant.

i've never heard a single good thing about being a chef. it'll kill the hobby for you, and it pays fuck all.

finish your college course, and use your spare time to work on your cooking. do a couple of master classes, buy a few teaching books, watch a lot of youtube videos. if you can't do the above then you couldnt be a chef anyway.

the difference between loving cooking as a hobby/at home and cooking as a job is a pretty big difference.

or do what ever you want im not your mother

I've thought about the same thing. Long story short, my chance at having my dream job that also pays a fuck ton of money got ruined because of a fucking woman and now I am studying stupid shit at a stupid college and contemplating suicide every day. Cooking is the only thing that keeps me happy. I don't even really care about making decent money anymore, I'm thinking about going to a culinary school.

But how can I do that with no formal cooking experience? I cook at home a lot but I still don't know how to do a lot of stuff. Not to mention, I don't want to just work at Olive Garden or some local pub or something. I want to work in a kitchen of a moderately upscale restaurant with seasonal menus and shit like that

heh, I used to work in restaurants for a bit over 10 years. Everything from floor, bar, kitchenhand, and short-order cook stuff.

Now I'm studying IT to get the hell out of those alcohol soaked, toxic shitholes. Plus I'm guessing my legs had about another two years at most before they gave out from constantly spending 8 hours a day on my feet. I just want a job where I can sit down now. I would suggest against it, cooks are not happy people as a general rule.

I disagree. Most of my friends, relatives, people I know are in some sort of skilled trade and while yeah they make OK to decent money, you're either breaking your back doing it or putting up with a mountain of bullshit (usually from the state), they get taxed to death and get laughable benefits. If you're an independent contractor there are some obvious perks and it's probably the purest form of meritocracy in this country but you get no help whatsoever, just you and the taxman. The only people I know that are truly satisfied are state employees and the goons that get their contracts, but that just feels like selling your soul to the devil to me.

I'm not here to get rich anyways I just want to do something I don't hate. I have other passion so it's not like I'm ruining the only thing I have.

Yeah, a lot of the time it comes down to people's preferences I guess. I've been a cook and I hated it, I've been an archivist/records manager for public administration and I hated it even more. Said fuck it, went to trade school and to date it's been the best decision I've ever taken in my whole life by far.
