I'm of the opinion that all great sandwiches have a similar balance of contrasting elements. Some others that are on the same level include:
Italian cold cut hoagie
Banh mi
Reuben
Torta
Cuban sandwich
Coney dog (chili dog with mustard and raw onion)
Hatch chili cheeseburger
Catfish/oyster Po' Boy
Muffalatta
Bagel with cream cheese, lox, capers and onion
Philly roast pork sandwich with broccoli rabe
Gyro/Adana kebab sandwich
Falafel sandwich
Pulled pork with coleslaw
All of these achieve greatness by balancing contrasting elements. That's what sets them apart. More simple sandwiches, like ham and cheese or pastrami on rye can be equally amazing, but only when made with the best quality ingredients.
