Second arc is about a wayward ghost.
Third arc is about jealousy, love, revenge and unrequited feelings.
Bakemonogatari had a great story and entertaining conversations.
Life and death stuff happens in it, not every second of it but it does happen.
Everyone should just sit through the first series, I don't know anybody that has that didn't like it, even forced a few people and afterwards they wanted to see the rest.
