Take Canada for example. Do you think a lot of people give a shit when Canada is praised and compared to America? No one does. Canada is a country with a powerful economy and everything and America hardly sees itself separate from it, let alone considers it a threat.
And then Mexico is generally considered shit by Americans and all other nations are "over there" somewhere so we can bash them all.
European countries are all smashed together in the same land mass, so it means confrontations are a daily thing. It's like if America had 10 Canada-like nations around it. We would eventually consider ourselves part of the american landmass rather than fiercely american. But we're so isolated from the land masses that have been fighting for 10,000 years that we still hold onto the 'Us Vs. Them' mentality.
