You can justify what they done easily. They didn't do anything wrong, but at the same time, they also didn't act the way Obi-Wan and Yoda would advise in the OT movies.
That's what I'm talking about. That is a prefect example of how Luke AND Qui-Gon if you bring him up, are examples of Lucas characters who do not fit his alleged black and white spectrum.
I think he may have meant stuff like characters who pinball between good and evil, when he said he hated the concept of "gray" jedi, because at least in my book, if you do what Yoda explicitly tells you a Jedi never does, then you are not 100% Jedi.
You might be a good guy, but you're not what a Jedi is, so you're not completely "light side", rather a possibly very bright gray.
