If it was close at hand, we should be able to see it in the shots of him driving and talking to his daughter - it'd pretty much have to be on his lap. It's not visible, so it's in the back.

The only way the gun should come back into play is if the daughter gets it out while the dad's confronting whoever.

You know what? Screw it. At least he acknowledged that Amazi-Girl fucks everything up and that it's only a matter of time before her bullshit catches up with her and she gets someone hurt or even killed. At this point that's enough to call this update an improvement.

Best case scenario at this point to salvage the scene is Sal stops Amazi-Girl and the dad gets away. The fact that Amber VS Sal has to happen eventually gives me hope that this is the case and it would actually make some amount of sense from a storytelling perspective. But if this storyline has taught us anything, it's that Willis will always go the dumbest, most nonsensical route possible so I'm not holding my breath.

Also why is Joyce coming with? Wouldn't she make it more difficult for Sal to drive properly and get involved? The obvious answer is that there's a wacky Joyce-freaking-out-on-the-motorcycle scene coming up to fuck up any remaining sense of drama and suspense and make this mess even less believable.

Either by presence alone or by shouting something like "Bitch you be trippin'" this triggers the Amazo. She snaps, goes for the gun, pumps it once, and double-taps. I can't say if she goes for Hamfist or Black Stabby, but she puts somebody in the hospital and becomes a wanted criminal on campus.

Then again, this is David Willis we're talking about here. Knowing him, this gets resolved with Blackie being proven wrong about her biases against Amazo or something.

A man who goes about writing on social issues with all the subtlety of a roofer plying his trade with a smoked ham, has no business writing about such things. Willis isn't a sophisticated writer, or all that sophisticated of a thinker. What's admirable about him is his autistic dedication towards following his schedule, and producing his comics. Beyond that, he's a twisted up person with a lot of hurt locked inside.

All the social causes he champions, the focus on gays, women, and minorities in particular, are just a symptom of his deeply unhappy childhood at the hands of fundamentalist parents. This comic, his entire identity, is the result of decades of unresolved baggage regarding his parents, and a rejection of how they raised him. That's deeply tragic, and he has my sympathy in that respect. However, I think it's more than a little inappropriate to use plotlines about women, gays, and minorities to vent about his Daddy issues. Especially when he continues to remain willfully blind about the actual richness and complexity of life.

In his worldview and comic, FundieDad isn't a real person, he's a demon to triumph over in validation of his individuality and belief structure. I have no doubt FundieDad is based on some of Willis own life experience, and that's something I'm sympathetic towards. At the same time, until he can actually make a character like FundieDad interesting for dramatic/comedic purposes, he'll never really grow as a writer or a person.

Willis needs to stop hating on his parents, stop playing with toys, and find his own identity instead of defining it by whatever others oppose.

This is like the third or fourth time Willis has relaunched the Walky brand, with basically the same characters. He's went from Slice-of-Life, to sci-fi adventure, to nerd culture/social commentary, and now back to slice-of-life.

He basically took a page from Jeph Jacques book, realized he could do college misadventures basically in his sleep, and drop Shortpacked to build up a huge DoA backlog.

You'd have to remove the part about the redhead dating an autist and the girl dressed as a superhero chasing them, because they're just too retard to ever work under anyone's writing.

A story about a conservative father trying to "save" his daughter from being gay and its repercutions could work but Willis just adds too many cartoonish elements for it to be taken seriously.

I just seems like everything is all pointless drama (I mean I dont know what else I was expecting, but still) now, and there is less humor/the humor isn't as good anymore. Also getting pissed at some of the characters. I cant stand amazigirl, and I find becky annoying. There are too many characters now, the comic boucning back and forth all over the place. I would rather have a few weeks dedicated to one character, and less back and forth stuff between them. It occasionally happens, but not as much as I'd like. It sucks because I really enjoyed the comic for the first year or two, as well as shortpacked. I might check back on in a few months, but for now the comic is just generally 'eh' and dissapointing compared to what it used to be/could be.

I DO still overall like the comic and I kinda GET Becky, but there are too many characters and too much story bouncing that keeps the comic from being consistently coherent and interesting.

He wants to have a ton of dialogue in a newspaper style strip. That just means 60% of it is pure text. That full page like he did in Shortpacked would have been much better, this just hurts my eyes, there's nothing happening in the strip and even if there is and there's no dialogue you just have four tiny panels of action, meaning for example a fistfight can be a week worth of material.
Or maybe that's the point. Less effort for each individual strip and he can draaaaaag everything out.

That's actually a pretty rad metaphor. Imagine a roofer, slapping a big smoked ham against the roofing tiles, having to work ten times as hard, and everyone can see him straining in the sun, and wondering why he's using a ham (get it? ham-handed?) and people watching him flail helplessly at trying to get it done is only drawing a bigger crowd. That said, I'm a big fan of Willis' work. Maintaining the metaphor, I find the rhythmic slapping sound makes a great techno bass line I like to dance to.

I mean, it HAS been presented that Walky is the golden child and that Sal is the unfavorite and her parents, mom especially, have been shit to her since she was a little girl.
But the only indications we have of it being racially motivated, outside of Sal's declaration, are Walky's statements of taking pride in being genetically beige while his sister is black and their father not liking that Sal let her hair go curly.

If it's taking this long to tell a part of the story that I guess we're supposed to take for granted, something is going wrong with the narrative.

This comic is damn bloated and scattered. If it was about narrative over lasting forever then I'd recommend a more Khaos Komix approach where each character had a narrative arc that advances the plot with each character going back some to reveal new information.

But this is Willis's money maker and with a baby on the way I get that "lasting forever" means it'll several more years until Roz's plan to hook Leslie up with Robin will be mentioned again.

And no, a single line about her hair isn't enough to justify that line of reason, not even close.

Sal is portraying every sign of someone who is rejecting responsibility and projecting her faults onto others.

"I-It's not my fault than I'm a dysfunctional, shitty human being! My parents were RACIST against me!"

If anything, going by what has actually been shown, it would be far more reasonable to simply assume that Sal is the one that subconsciously hates her own "blackness".

The fact that Willus insists the story should be read the way he says it should be read is just another vestige of his hatred of his own parents. Because in a Willis story parents are always ALWAYS in the wrong about everything.

Yes. That's my point. This is a slow story. You'd better accept it if you want to read it. I mean, barely a few weeks has elapsed, in-story and it has been going for 5 years. That's the rythme of the comic.

Archivally reading it, though, it's actually result in a correct and normally slow passing like you'd seem to prefer.

But you have to accpet the sotry is being released on a daily schedule.

For a comic that has updated daily since 5 years, it's read surprisingly fast.

So, it(s not so much the passing of the sotry who is at fault, but the release schedule.

Missing my point. the narrative flow itself isn't bad, as reading it archivally actually result in a decent and not too slow story-telling where things evolve relatively fast.

Except he most likely hasn't.
It's very clear it's part of a story Willis wanted to tell since the start.

There is no difference between this and any other show where a character is shown to have been secretly evil all along and flashback of how are shown after the reveal.

Not to mention, a lot of people here seems to only put those characters on only the extremity of the Good and Evil spectrum, where they are actually balanced.

The Walkerton parents aren't shown to be ig Horrible awful people they are shown to have flaws and despite those flaws, still care about their kids.

But for some reason, that they might have internalized racism seem to make a lot of people completely flip out.

Didn't something like this happen back in Shortpacked? When Leslie's mom was introduced people actually sympathized with her. So in her next few appearances Willis wrote her acting like a completely hateful cunt, so people would GET that she's SUPPOSED to be EVIL and any empathy towards her is WRONG.
The cycle repeats itself every time. Consistent update schedule, insane buffer(mid February of next year he's fucking up to), frequent updates and fun little bonuses when he can manage(which is pretty often) very well made site and layout, very well made and organized books and kickstarters, and very reasonable ads among other things.

I am jerking the guy off but his business strategy and ability to position himself and use the right platforms at the right time made him turn a meh profitable comic into one that's making more money than the average american household income by a significant margin.

Do you know how much people flipped when scientists considered renaming Triceratops Torosaurus, since it was believed that Triceratops was really just a juvenile Torosaurus? For fucks sake, hundreds of years later, Brontosaurus is still commonly used when describing any old sauropod, even though only recently was it discovered that Brontosaurus WAS actually a separate species from Apatosaurus. People really like to keep dinosaur names the way they are.

Deinonychus's estimated sizes is still smaller than the raptors in the JP flick. As far as height goes the closer dino would be Utahraptor.

failing to see your point here. I was referring to just changing the names of the species in relevance to the different sized dinosaurs. The way they were presented was accurate based on the paleontological studies of the time. Of course these have all changed and we now see a huge variety of dinosaurs as having evidence that they were feathered beasts, but that doesn't change the fact that the name used for the big raptors in the movies was the name for tiny ones, which a simple change in the name would fix.

The trouble with change usually comes from a change in a routine that helped make the day easier, ie my shit was over here, I knew where it was, when I need my shit I go over here, now it's over there and I need to rework my movement patterns and rethink all this shit. How many webcomics are actually self-sustaining and how many come close to being this absurdly profitable?

Based of the wikipedia article regarding this subject, there are 50 webcomic artist who have been found or have claimed to be solely supported from their work. Besides Penny Arcade(duh), Homestuck, Megatokyo(which is probably not doing that well anymore), and xckd, I would be willing to bet that most of the people on that list are just scraping by with the money they're making while David Willis is clearing 6 figures and making 3 times the household income on his money alone in the part of Ohio he lives in.

Closing point, the guy was making profit on his comics before he even had patreon/kikestarter/project wonderful/ an actual well made merch store. So the business side of things has been pretty damn good for more than a decade.
