To add on to this question, what do people think of the non-English dubs of this show in general? Any characters that sound really bad or even better than the originals, or translation errors? Name changes?

I'm really curious about this stuff, but haven't seen any dubs posted online besides the Spanish and the first episode of the Russian one.

Yeah, it was a misinformed newspaper that did a poor research about the show when it was going to be released in latinamerica. The headline reads as "Star Wars, now for girls". Even Daron Nefcy was freaked out about it and commented so on her Twitter.

Thoughts on Toffee?

At first I was just glad when he showed up because he wasn't Ludo, but by now his character's one of the few elements of Star vs. I haven't had any complaints with yet, as much as I really like the show on the whole. Not in the sense that every episode he's been in has been perfect or something, but that despite the fact that the show can be all over the place in everything from characters to animation because of the number of storyboarders, he's remained consistent and it seems like they actually have a plan for his role in the story.

Also I was really glad they didn't resort to typical dumb shit in the finale that can happen when a cartoon doesn't know what to do with a villain they've built up-- like, he fucks up or becomes Ludo 2.0 so he can get defeated easily, or just becomes your standard gloating maniacal villain because why the fuck not (they got way more out of SURPRISE than they would have if he just became a fucking maniac for the rest of the episode).

Hope they can keep this up, given that Adam/Daron have been saying stuff to fans that's basically "we can't say he's coming back... but yeah, he's coming back."

Wow, a post on a /co/ Star thread that isn't shitposting, shipping, or begging for/writing fics...color me fucking impressed

I thought that, compared to how flighty and fun the show is, he was just the villain the show needed. I was thinking to myself, "Yeah, yeah, he kidnapped Marco which makes him better than Ludo because he's finally going to get the wand, and this isn't bad or anything, but it's predictable"

And then he has Star DESTROY it, totally out of left field. Again, it's not as big, "Luke, I am your father" or something, but that was still a legit twist from this kind of show. They definitely have to bring him back in some capacity...I can't see how they can do anything otherwise. Also, I'm interested to see what kind of possible Toffee-Marco link might exist, they've been heavily hinting at it.

Home from work and just in time for the first Star weekend thread...noice.

Ok so I slightly sad update, regarding my work on the upcoming VN game. I have been fired from it due to how I can basically only work on it on Sunday's as I work a lot right now. Since you know I work retail and the holidays are winding up, my free time just took a nose dive. That and I do kinda think they did not like where I was going with the starco and jarco storyline as it was going to be more adventure and comedy then relationship drama. I was still gonna give cute starco/jarco moments obviously but I wasn't gonna over do it, and the bad endings were gonna be appropriately dark, gravity falls dark is how I described it, maybe they did not like that either idk they said its just the schedule thing but idk can't help but feel the contrary.

I do have something for you guys tho. It's not exactly a proper fan fiction though. What I did get finished before letting go is the introduction/prolouge to the game before it starts proper and I want to share that with you guys at least, give you a sense of where I was going with my storylines. Of course its not gonna be used as far as I can tell and all the routes will be written by someone else.

I can definitely see the similarities, and shit, it even goes further...that last Gravity Falls teaser had Bill doing mannerisms and actions that were really similar to Stan, in the same way that some people are comparing Toffee to Marco...it's getting tin-foily and "deepest lore", but it's definitely something noticeable

It doesn't turn me on but I can totally see why other people like it. Besides, Star has much to offer and little defects for potential girlfriend so getting cucked should hurt her three times as much as somebody who has real issues. I mean, it's terrible to offer everything to somebody and get rejected. If she had flaws she could at least try to work on them or stay justified at the very least.

I like it mainly because Jackie is the girl Marco has liked for so long and would be refreshing if he gets to be with her and happy and not go the cliché "Oh he liked her for no reason and as soon as he gets close to her he sees how shitty she is and instantly loses interest."

We already have seen Jackie is very comfortable around Marco and nothing about her comes of as overly negative so Marco would just drop all his interest on her like in other shows with a similar romance trope.

I just want Marco to succeed in winning her heart, darn it!

I'd say the former works for the theme of the show; some storylines need the full time slot to develop, whilst the majority of episode ideas are likely based around a punchy 11 minute format adventure. What the show has to do is just sort out when it wants to use which format, which I'd imagine will be easier in season 2 with the experience the crew gained from season 1.

Loved it. The 'lessons' about individuality felt kinda hamfisted, but I guess it was in-tune with the 'sweet and perfect' mask the school was putting out there. Guess another thing I didn't like was that I felt like Star's crying scene should've had another take. Didn't really sound like crying...

It did the creepy atmosphere really well. The constant 'night time' colors, a setting that would be quaint under normal circumstances is eerie due to the restrictive, prison-like undercurrent. This is even acknowledge via Marco admiring the decor and furnishing up until he sees the brainwashy aspects firsthand. Apparently the soundtrack was fairly barren?

It was kind of refreshing seeing Star being out of her element in how nervous and antsy she was throughout the episode. Considering how lightly she takes almost(keyword) everything else. Marco was on such a roll that I think it's fair to assume that he's higher priority on Heinous' shitlist.(I'm curious what she'll do when she discovers he's not really a 'princess') Even Ponyhead was tolerable with how she motivated Star to save her earth bestie.(Got a bit of chuckle when Star didn't answer her "I'm still your best bestie overall right?"--friendcucked?) Though I'm not sure how she'll go about making sure no one else gets brainwashed like her? Sooner or later Heinous is gonna regain control right? Feels like the Mistress would go on security overdrive after this episode, though I guess she might forgo restoring order in favor of some revenge. who knows.

2. If Jarco is a thing and Marco is off the market, then Star needs some one, and I think that someone should be Tom. Tom doesn't strike me as someone who is totally beyond saving, even though he has issues and needs to work on himself more, I get the sense that he genuinely is trying to be better for Star. And it's not like he sees her as a trophy for the taking, he has powers and shit that he could use to try and force Star into liking him, but he opts to wok on himself and be good. And Star, as we know, likes a challenge and an adventure, and wants to push herself beyond her comfort. The fact that she attended the BMB at all with Tom means that, at the VERY least, she saw an inkling of...something in him, and she's willing to give it a chance. I can see a scenario where Tom stops trying to be cocky and opens up to Star about hard it is to be a demon and how he sincerely likes her and is trying so hard but just keeps screwing up, and Star is touched by his honesty and his feelings and opens up a little in return.

Again, it's a long shot, but the idea of Star/Tom, an inherently difficult but well-meaning ship, is deeply satisfying

That's fair...I get what you're saying, but even though 9 times out of 10 moving on is the right thing, there's always that rare instance where coming back for another go works out in the end.

With this in mind, plus the "bad boy" phase, it's also important to note that we still don't know WHY they broke up the first time, and hopefully we'll hear a little more about it and see what the future holds

I feel your Star/Tom pain, and am planning on rectifying it. I'm working on a fic atm that's going to be pretty ambitious in that department as well as the general plot, but I've gone to 12-hour days at work so I'll be releasing an initial installment of chapters either Sunday or next Friday, rather than the once-a-week I had originally envisioned.

That said, I do hope to go for weeklies starting next weekend. Hopefully it'll meet expectations for people who are into the ship and change minds for people who aren't.

So what is it about, Janna?

This character mistifies me, she started as a very standard background character on the same level as Hope and I dare say lower than Sabrina who had the "always gets hurt" shtick going for her. at best she was one of the two girls I saw people suspect as being the "Jackie" mentioned in one of the early story boards before the series debut.

But then comes Mewberty and she gets her first time on the spotlight, they could left her as that "girl that likes creepy and witchy stuff" but they decided to also add she being weirdly flirty with Marco, sneaking her hand into his hoodie, stealing his house keys and claims that Marco will "need her eventually". then she continues appearing along the episode but nothing of what she does gets any sort of resolution.

Just what is her deal!? Marco clearly avoids her seeing how he instantly rejects her help, has she caused him trouble in the past? is her flirty attitude just how she normally is or she has an interest in Marco?

Hey guys, just wanted to drop by and say hello. The game is still in progress, don't worry.

I wanted to clarify the reason why WriteFriend was laid off. In the letter I have said that the reason for it is due to the schedule. The game is starting to slowly catch motion and I need to talk to everybody as much as possible and most importantly in live sessions, since that means we can come to conclusions faster. Due to our huge time zone difference, that wasn't possible, we were meeting live only on Sunday late at night.

The timing of it was a bit awkward since it might look like that I fired WriteFriend because of his idea for the story. That isn't true, I have had many cases where I had different opinions with the Manna writer on the Janna route and we came to a compromise in most cases. I talk to the Manna writer at least 5-6 times a day, and since we are really close in time zones that is manageable. However, having a 7+ hour time zone difference means that one or the other would be either at work or sleeping, while the other party was awake.

I hope that neither WriteFriend nor you guys think less of me, because this wasn't a personal issue, it was regarding the development process as a whole. Again, to clarify the whole situation, the only reason was the scheduling.

Well good news is that WF already said he doesn't hold any grudges, but its reasuring to learn that the reason was not because his writing style clashing with the team's ideas.

That's the problem with Fan projects, they are not professional so people don't get paid, and that means life can happen for any of the members at any moment making him/her lose free time and if that member is important it throws a wrench on the entire project slowing everyone else down too. WF writing TWO storylines means his lack of time would been a big problem.

In the end I wish you guys the best of luck and that everyone can find the time to work on the game as hard as you can. Problems will for sure arise but I trust you guys can manage.

It's funny, I when you originally pitched the VN idea considered voluteering to write mini scenarios for side charactes like Alfonzo, Ferguson, Hope and Sabrina. But I decided not to since my job schedule is literally the most unpredictable mess ever so I can never know how much free time I will have at any time. that and me not being a very good writer to begin with, of course.

I've seen different people try to transcribe what she says after "I'm sorry" (and some people even attempting to decipher the unicorn ghost's whispering), but each attempt seems pretty different.

The one thing that seems sort of consistent among the ones I've seen, and that I can actually hear when listening for it, is:

A million times this. You hit the nail on the head with this sentence. Trying to organize and plan ahead with other people's free time and scheduling, especially since the team is consisted of multiple people, is a logistical nightmare.

Fan projects are very hard to achieve, but sometimes they can produce really cool things that may have never been possible otherwise due to various factors that come in game development.

I think we might get a 3rd. Not that they've said anything about it yet, but the first season did well and was renewed quickly. Not sure if we'd get any more, but I wouldn't be opposed to it.

Anime in Japan isn't dependent on revenue as much as it is merchandising, which creates a ton of stupid problems. (I mean aside from kids' anime like I dunno, your chinese cartoon equivalent to Barney or whatever, but yeah moving on.) This explains why you always see seasonal sales threads on /a/, and why they make such a bigger, much prouder deal of it than /v/ does with games.

This means anime is less rewarded for viewer count as much as it is selling merchandise like BDs, figurines, etc.. Working in the anime industry is basically like working in a sweatshop; every anime episode averages to about a minimum of one million dollars if not more, I kid you not. Animators work day and night to the bone to get their stuff done. This is why it's difficult to pump out more original anime than it is to just adapt a manga and hope for the best. Adapting manga also comes with the benefit of essentially being a large, glorified commercial. So in addition to all the merch that gets pumped out, buying copies of the manga helps a lot too. Unfortunately the hefty price of creating anime doesn't make this a viable business practice. Blu-Rays are expensive to moronic degrees, thus making it difficult for the viewer base (which may I remind you, is composed of people that are quite likely just making minimum wage if not somehow lower considering the stigma of otaku and whatnot) to make their interests more apparent. This is why toys are released early before certain anime even begin; to maximize profit in the biggest net of time possible.

The worst part is that it has just about nothing to do with ratings, because why care about the quality feedback people have to offer from their thoughts when apparently just burning a couple thousands of dollars a season on toys is worth more.

The whole model is basically based off 60s American economy where even that managed to fail in sustaining itself. It's pitiful honestly and I have no idea why they insist on keeping around it.

A funny thing is that Star got a second season ordered even before the first episode aired. I think I read in an interview with the team that Disney made the call due to the explosion of fan art and positive feedback they got from the fans. I wonder what really goes behind the curtains, maybe Disney has big plans for their new princess

In the west I see merch more as something that sustains shows over additional seasons more than a driving force behind those shows existing in the first place.

After all, with each season, it gets more and more expensive to produce a show (largely due to labor agreements). Once the audience of a show has stabilized (likely in its second season), over time the return on the show will only decrease. One way to offset this is merch (and/or just have half the entire show done by two people ala Adult Swim).

Cute character designs, catchy theme song, and probably just the general premise (magical girl stuff, some action, perfect setting for shipping drama).

Pretty much all that fanart was spawned from the theme song being shown at Comic-Con in 2014 and uploaded to Youtube. Also Daron and others who worked on the show helped generate hype by uploading their own "fan" art before it premiered.

Dude, what if E,E,n'E had been limited to 4 seasons?

The rule should be, as long as it's good, quality work, as long as there's material to be used, run it.

Some concepts, no matter how awesome, have limits. Phineas and Ferb, for example, had to have the entire show fit into one summer. That's a limit.

Star's concept is much, MUCH wider. The entire UNIVERSE of the imagination is out there, and with one snip of the dimensional scissors, they can explore pretty much any idea or theme or setting they want.

Keep getting in good writers with good ideas and put out the good material.
