Fat used to be a sign of wealth. Now it's the shitty food we can't seem to escape unless we pay extra. It's difficult to thin down.

Actually meat was a rare luxury for everyone but the rich for most of human history, and the advent of widespread chronic obesity amongst Americans wasn't desk jobs, it was sugar becoming so fucking cheap that we can eat a shit-ton of it every fucking day, rotting our teeth and setting our waists ballooning. You can be poor and eat healthful but you must have some basic cooking skills AND the time to cook. Poor people tend to have shitty jobs after which cooking is not appealing. Processed food is one of the only spots of happiness. Tastes great, instantly acquired, and seems cheaper at first place (with poor people often being bad at long term budgeting and all).

Yeah, I eat pretty absurdly and I'm in reasonably good shape because I have a very physical job where I'm on my feet and moving all day.

My wife was the same, went to a desk job, and blew up in to mild obesity. (I still love her and still find her attractive, but it's true).

I don't know if I'm actually healthy, but my figure is fine.

the ability to "multi-task" must be taught and we have at least 2 generations of people now who didn't grow up cooking because not cooking is more pleasant in every way except health.

Maggie is very capable for her age. I distinctly remember an episode in which she organizes a heist to get back the pacifiers for all the other daycare denizens. And another one where she saves her father from drowning. And just recently she came up with a plan to free her possum friend before he gets cooked for dinner by the Yokels. Shooting Mr Burns hardly makes her a "sniper baby."

yeah his point was they took this and ran with it, turning an accident into evidence of a character trait.

Maggie was originally a regular baby, not a genius baby.

although the pacifier incident came before the shooting, so you could blame A Streetcar Named Marge for coming up with that so-called character trait for Maggie. But I thought it was clearly meant to be silly there. The later staff took it extremely literally and decided that Maggie must not be a regular baby, being the retards they are.

Cooking a delicious meal feels incredibly satisfying

It's real nice when housemates walk into the kitchen and say something smells real good, or if you cook a meal (even a simple one) for someone other then yourself and they like it, or maybe it's the fact that you cooked too much to eat and you now don't need to cook dinner tomorrow or the day after, or that you only spent a small amount of money and managed to make a totally kickass meal.

Really why wouldn't you want to cook your own food, assuming you've picked shopping items that work as ingredients in proper meals and not just as snacks or instant-meals.

Seriously? Boiling water + cooking pasta takes 10mins. While it's doing that put a can of diced tomatoes and other acceptable pasta sauce ingredients in a pot, chuck it on the stove till the pasta is done cooking and bam that's a tasty meal in 10mins. Washing up should take anyone without a disability 1min tops.

Also it's not like you need to constantly watch the rice, actual time spent ricing wouldn't equate to more then 10mins so don't pull that shit on me.

If you're talking about a generation or group of people then yeah this is legitimate but if you're talking about yourself (which is what I'm assuming) then I can tell you now, it does take work but not so much that it's going to be a challenge or take up too much time.

You can always start at a halfway point too if you're finding it too hard, just use can/jar ingredients that require little prep (just opening and combining them) but still make a meal. Move onto preparing the actual ingredients yourself when you feel skilled enough to dice a tomato or grate a carrot.

I don't care if this is bait, people blame their being fat on the cost of food and gym, genetics, and what have you all the fucking time.

I was on a medication that's known to cause weight gain; ate junk food and drank beer all the time, gained a ton of weight. Then I realized how fucking disgusting I'd become and how much worse I was feeling, so I decided I'd do something about it.
Lost 60 pounds within four months by eating less and exercising at home, and while that's a little drastic, I firmly believe the large majority of people could lose weight if they stopped dodging the responsibility for their own body.

I will never understand when people say they "can't cook." I'm not a professional chef and I'm not saying that knowing how to cook = making giant 5 course meals or anything. But seriously, how do these people live their lives without being able to coil water? What do you do if you're hungry and it's late, do you just have to go to McDonald's for every meal? Get a crock pot, you just dump a bunch of crap in there and 8 hours later you have dinner. Get some chicken and fry it in olive oil with some herbs. Boil some water and have some pasta. It's not hard and it saves a ridiculous amount of money.

I'm the only one at my job who packs lunch and people think I'm strange for it, but I don't get how you can buy every meal every day. I don't understand how your wallet or your health can afford that.

As someonew who eats a lot of pre-made, takeout and delivery food, it's just being lazy.
I "can't cook" in the sense that I'm not a good cook, but I could perfectly cook well enough to feed myself. I just can't be bothered a lot of the time.
Cooking can also be time-consuming, which is a factor for some people.

Care to elaborate? Last I checked eating a regular amount of pasta for a meal doesn't make you obese.

Pretty sure it has good stuff in it too, like protein, minerals and vitamin B. That's just the pasta itself, my (and yours too I hope) pasta sauce is mainly vegetables which, did you know, are actually healthy for you. A sprinkle of cheese on top isn't going to make you obese either.

Pasta is usually just...flour, water and eggs. And if it's pasta you are buying from a supermarket, it's probably from refined flour that moves all the nutrients and then artificially adds a couple back.

Pasta is nutritious only considering what you eat with it, not really the actual pasta.

That's only true for agricultural societies, like Rome, Egypt, etc.
But nomadic and hunter-gatherer cultures quite often ate lots of meat and animal products.

Funny thing is, you can see the difference between the two diet styles in their skeletons. The meat eating societies usually were healthier and lived longer, while the agricultural ones were saddled with much of the same civilisation ills we have today.
Their teeth were worse, for example, thanks to grain chafing more than meat.
Of course, that high meat onsumption included high physical activity during the day while hunting and herding.

Anyone making pasta sauce at home that's putting 'a fuckton of sugar' in it is doing something very wrong. According to Dolmios (most popular pasta sauce brand in aus) website bolognese pasta sauce has 5 grams of sugar per 100 grams which seems pretty reasonable for store-bought stuff.

Maybe Amerifat pasta sauce is different but seems alright here.

So when you buy pasta it's by some conglomerate that's sucked the good part of pasta out, and then sells you jugs of sugary tomato syrup with chunks in it and calls it pasta sauce. And then you a buy a package of frozen premixed precut vegetables and throw it in and call it cooking. In that world, pasta is not healthy or nutritious. It's just carbs.

I mean I don't claim to know lots about American food but I did assume it was similar to ours here in Aus. We're pretty bad with the whole sugar thing too, I know lots of other stuff here that is filled with sugar, like tomato sauce (aka ketchup). I guess Aus pasta sauce not having loads of sugar is just an anomaly.

this is bullshit though. It's not just "some" exercise, you have to excercise enough to burn off the calories and the more you've stuffed in your mouth the longer you need to work out to burn it off. For example to burn off a regular 0,5 liter coca cola you'd need to do 30 mins of aerobic, or to burn off a small-ish burger meal of 1030 kcal you'd need to do aerobics for 1 hour 20 mins or run for 2 hours 5 minutes.

Sure it affects things but exercise affects mainly your general fitness and muscles, while weight control is best done through controlling what you eat.
