As in, it wasn't like she had ~dreams~ of becoming a mechanic but her mother or Peggy forced her into the school and she tried to escape from that. Even the writers never seemed to think about her getting a job in that area, as their best idea for her advancing beyond hairstyling was putting her in community college (even though there she had just as much idea of what the fuck she was doing as she did in beauty school).
if her actual talents got squandered, that was her own decision within the world of the show, in addition to the writers choosing not to build on them. Though her having a kid at like 21 seemed kinda rushed, the fact that she has a job and a house literally as good as Hank and Peggy's (who I believe lived in an apartment right after THEY got married) means she isn't doing too bad for herself.
Just because she married a hick doesn't mean she's now exactly where she was before, especially considering her main problem wasn't the trailer as much as it was that her mother was a manipulative and abusive alcoholic.
I'm not even that big of a fan of Luanne, but I don't think the writers of the show ever had a concrete plan for her so I can't get too pissed about her story.
