/co/ I have a simple, but layered question for you

Should the mouths of cartoon skulls move when they talk?

On one hand, it's a very basic bit of visual language that easily indicates that someone is talking. On the other hand, a skull can't talk by itself. It's safe to assume that in any setting with a strong grasp on things like logic and rules, the Skeleton's voice is being sent out with telepathy or some other means.

So, should cartoon skeletons mouths move when they talk?

Only when they're being really vocal, such as shouting or laughing hard.

it's possible that the voice is being magically played somewhere in their throat/skull and thus the mouth would have to open to let the sound out properly.

Also it would just look weird if there is no movement at all. However the mouth should move realistically, not like in nightmare before christmas.

>3 Have them not open their mouth when talking but then you need to convey the fact that they are talking in another way. Like having their eyes glow.

Both options can work if properly set up. Death in the Discworld cartoons (and also in the live-action miniseries) spoke without jaw movements; in the second videogame (full-blown animated production) it was the opposite, but it worked well because of the exaggeratedly cartoony tone of the game.

In seriously-toned venues, flappy-jawed skeletons can work too; the movement can be unnecessary but involuntary, as a poor undead wretch could be unconsciously remembering ancillary aspects of its original life, while still projecting voice through supernatural means.

Assuming they were flesh and blood before they became skeletal then the moving of their mouths would have been a learned trait that would be hard to forget, even in whatever existence they now occupy. Muscle memory is one of the strongest traits we have.

Depends on the origins of the skeleton.

If it was once alive I'd say "yes" because it's reflexive. A reanimated corpse would probably subconsciously mimic all the movements it preformed in life regardless of whether or not it had the means to do so.

If the skeleton was always of supernatural origin, like the grim reaper or a demon, etc., than I would say "no", jaw movement wouldn't be necessary.
