The Invaders seems like a strange super team conceptually. A patriot super soldier, an underwater mutant king (did the Nazis attack Atlantis?) and a robot on fire?

Can someone who is less of a pathetic casual than I am explain how they came about?

They were the Big Three of the Golden Age. But they weren't a team back then, they were retconned as a team later.

During the Golden Age, they did form a short lived team, the All Winners Squad along with the Whizzer and Miss America. But that was right after WWII.

Atlantis was attacked by Nazis several times during WWII, but Sub-Mariner and his fleet of flying submarines kicked their asses pretty bad.

Also Jim Hammond killed Hitler. That's canon.
