Will we ever see adult animation that isn't just crass, vulgar and "edgy" comedies like South Park and Family Guy produced on a larger scale?
Not just more subdued and mundane stuff like King of the Hill or things like Bojack Horseman, grappling with ennui and existential angst, but even stuff like action-adventure. I recently watched Justice League: Gods & Monsters and I was caught off guard by the cynicism, raw brutality and infrequent profanity, which while not foreign to superhero comics, is pretty unnerving when the movie shares an art style to the Justice League cartoon that aired on TV a decade ago. And obviously the heroes weren't massacring a bunch of criminals for a crude gag.
Or is western animation stuck in that same general pit as anime, the powers that be more interested in selling toys and merchandise?
