Okay so I finally saw Ultron. What the fuck. I heard some bad things about it but I wasn't expecting it to suck the way it did, I'm a fan of most of the rest of MCU wtf was that?

That was so fucking awful. Everything about that line and that scene and Hulk and widow was just so fucking terrible wtf?

And Ultron? Why in the hell was James Spader Ultron? He's good at certain roles but evil robot is not one of them. I generally like the quips and humor but not like that from a character like Ultron. That movie was just so bad, even after being warned it was bad.

Comics Ultron isn't exactly emotionless, arguably he's pissed off at a lot of things but he certainly doesn't laugh.

This isn't really Ultron, is it? More like the standard "program becomes self aware, learns to be human" story with genocide tacked on because he's the antagonist.

I'd probably rather rewatch this than the Avengers though.

yeah but he's an AI gained from scanning the mind stone, not just the standard cold and calculating AI program
he's also obsessed with having one special body he occupies, that makes more sense if he's a humanoid mind more than a computer program

MCU Ultron is some kind of digitized/synthesized humanoid sentience, and so he can have personality quirks. They should have kept in the Tony brain scan thing because then you can just say that without all this mind stone asspulling I'm doing.

Ultron's entire body is humanoid.

The movie itself goes out of it's way to mention that his bodies are way more humanoid than they need to be. Ultron's always had a messed-up boomerang bigortry with humans.

There's a deleted scene where Tony says he programmed him to "learn slang".

Which is apparently the ONLY scene they EVER shot, which explains ANYTHING about what Tony was actually DOING when he programmed him, and it's only a few seconds long, so why the FUCK would you cut that?

You realize the only reason Loki was written well in Thor was because Kenneth Brannagh made the movie right? The movies are made by committee now, with Fiege at the head of it and he's said he doesn't care about making interesting villains because it takes away from hero time.

Yeah, they pointed this out in the movie. It's presented as part of Ultron;s insanity. Remember, MCU Ultron was not built as a pure AI, he was created by copying the Mind Stone, he's closer to a living thing than a machine.

That's because the joints were smaller and more numerous with smoother edges, while Bayformer lips are made of a few, big, highly-visible segments.

There's a deleted scene where Tony talks about using his own brain as a blueprint for Ultron. Unfortunately Marvel cut a lot of significant scenes out of the movie and it was a constant battle between them and Joss. Some of the best scenes of the film Marvel went out of their way to try and cut or make purposely difficult to film

This is half-true and half not. The move suffered from a LOT of cut scenes that would have vastly improved the movie, but the "Tony basing Ultron on his brain" scene was never actually filmed. It was in the script (like Abomination and giant Ultron), but never made it to shooting.

Not only is Ultron as human as the humans he hates, but I personally thought an extra layer was added by the fact that he yearns to be human in some form but can't be. The character is undergoing an existential crisis. One of the first things he asks is where his body is and he says how it feels wrong. One of his goals is to literally create a synthetic human body.

If I recall correctly it was one of the scenes Marvel forced Joss. I know the vision sequences that Scarlett Witch gives The Avengers were supposed to be longer as well but Marvel didn't want them in the movie and significantly cut the time he had to film them in hopes he wouldn't have enough.

I saw that as being evidence that Tony didn't actually create Ultron and that Ultron had a body before being trapped in the Mind Gem. When Ultron is in the wrecked Legionaire body he mentions being tangled in "strings" which were the protocols Stark set up to contain the direction in which his "new" AI could think, but Ultron got out of that. There's also the fact that, during the initial conversation between Ultron and J.A.R.V.I.S, the flashback of Tony saying "Peace in our time" is seen from the Scepter's point of view, indicating that Ultron was already conscious in the Mind Gem before Tony and Bruce even got started. All Stark really did was provide a path for Ultron to get out of the Gem, he didn't actually create AI.
Oh, and also the holographic image of Ultron's program attacking J.A.R.V.I.S's program was not a new 3rd AI it was the same AI projection that was shown to be inside the Mind Gem already. They could easily put in a single throw-away line about Pym having trapped an AI in an alien super-computer gem and absolve Stark of all responsibility for Ultron.

Ultron was already an AI before Tony got his hands on it, it's mentioned by Tony at one point who also states that Strucker was getting help from the Mind Gem AI for his work. A lot of people miss that when it's very important to Ultron's characterization and even the reason why he killed Strucker. Additionally it's why he takes such a protective role over Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. In essence they're his children.

In his big monologue to The Avengers at the start he mentions how they don't want to allow change and evolution, which was clearly a reference to them stopping the experiments Strucker was doing.

What I think is implied is that Tony gave the AI sentience when he imprinted himself on it, giving it a humanity and personality that conflicted with the fact that it wasn't human. I agree about the strings being a bunch of rules, protocols, restrictions around how it should operate.

After going into the Waters of Sight, Thor even says that Ultron came from the Mindstone.

If it were a copy, there would have been three AI in that scene: JARVIS, Mindstone, and Copy-of-mindstone. There were only two, though, meaning Ultron *is* the mindstone AI.

The idea that a godly part of the universe could have part of it's power so easily extracted and destroyed is implausible.

We're not talking about JPG here, we're talking about comic book mind-trapped-in-magic-rock bullshit. Tony did not create an AI based on the one in the mindstone, the one in the mindstone became Ultron. If you want to simplify it as copy/paste into Avengers Tower's mainframe that's fine, but the fact remains that the AI that is the villain of the movie was already in the Scepter and is not anything that Tony created.

long answer, Joss Whedon only knows how to make TV Shows that have a down-to-earth feel to them. his formula is taking special people and depicting them as just like you or me, so to speak.
He doesn't know how to do 'big'. He doesn't know how to direct impressive cinematography and he doesn't know how to make characters larger than life and he doesn't know how to do fight scene that involve things other than shooting, punching, and stabbing.

Ultron has obviously had a body before. Why else would his lack of body be the first thing he notices if he were something Tony programmed? JARVIS didn't find it odd that he didn't have a body. Also there are already Ultron bodies in the Hydra facility when Tony finds the Scepter.

Because Jarvis isn't a magic consciousness who seems to take on traits from those around him. He's just a more complex version of SIRI.

The scenes are played as if he's going to create an AI based on the one in the stone, but what is actually shown is attempts to integrate code into the AI that's already there, and a Norse god who's just had a prophetic vision stating that Ultron came from the stone.

it's the same reason that people don't like how the vader knockoff in the new star wars just takes his helmet off and is normal underneath. a face unable to express makes it harder to tell what the villain is thinking and feeling, it makes them more enigmatic and it's harder to guage what lines they won't cross. it enhances their intimidation factor because they're harder to quantify. they don't seem to get scared and you can't tell when they're bluffing or lying.

Actually I meant to type "cut/paste" not "copy/paste" because if it had been "copy" and not "cut" then there would still have been a copy of the AI in the stone and Ultron wouldn't have needed to sit in a truck to upload himself into it.

Tony's programming changed the mind stone data into what became Ultron.

The quips are the norm for every single Marvel movie. So that was going to be in anyway.
But I don't think we needed an edgier Ultron. The one they presented could have worked if they actually tried to use the Stark-daddy-issue for anything.
That's the one interesting thing about Ultron and they just ditched it for a generic "robots want to replace humans" plot.

Not a computer program. A consciousness.

Brainwaves/etc. are as much decipherable code as an alien computer program would be.

Well there's dialogue in the film where Tony literally says this.

All those bodies in Strucker's basement that were built before the Avengers attacked his base and got the scepter, those were built from studying what Tony claims is an AI in the scepter.

And Tony asks Thor if he can study the scepter before it gets taken back to Asgard specifically so he and Banner can figure out that AI and use it to make their own.

It's like the ONLY dialogue in the whole film that says ANYTHING about where the fuck Ultron's programming comes from, since the fucking programming him scene was a silent goddamn montage and any other exposition scene about how Ultron's AI works was a fucking deleted scene...

Maybe, just maybe...because that's NOT the final version of the story?
What if...hear me out here...what if they decided NOT to have Tony program the AI and took out the dialogue that conflicted with the possibility of Ultron having already existed before Tony started fucking with the scepter. What if that's why they had a fucking GOD WITH A PSYCHIC VISION explicitly state that Ultron came from the mindstone?

No. He says there's a mind in it, he doesn't say that it has a mind of its own that definitely wasn't put into it at some point.
Even if Tony made modifications to Ultron's programming, the lines from Ultron about being tangled in "strings", being free of those strings, and having "moved beyond the mission" could easily be interpreted as Tony's influence on Ultron's personality not sticking in the long run.
So there are three ways to look at it:
1. Tony's programming fucked up whatever mind was in the stone and it went insane
2. Tony's attempt to constrain the mind in the stone failed and it reverted to its previous crazy
3. Tony didn't really affect the mind in the stone and it was crazy to begin with.

And in all three of these versions, Tony Stark did not create an AI. At best it could be said that he modified one. Because once again (again) if it had been the filmmaker's intent to show that Tony had created his own AI that was just patterned after the one in the stone then they would have shown his new AI alongside the one in the stone rather than only showing the stone's AI and JARVIS. And they would not have had Thor state that everything was the mindstone's fault and that Ultron came from the mindstone.

If Tony and Bruce didn't invent Ultron at all and the Mind Gem just shat an AI into the room when Tony's back was turned, then why spend so much screentime on having Tony's teammates be mad at him specifically for inventing a killer robot, and why not have it be more fucking clear by the end of the film that it was the gem's fault all along so the audience would know what the fuck was going on?

And the end credits scene is Thanos saying "Fine, I'll do it myself", directly implying that HE was somehow the one who made the Mind Gem shit out an inherently villainous AI into Stark's lab.

Ultron and his drones are Hydra tech, possibly improved with Stark ideas but you can see they have the same design to them before Ultron is even created

Okay, we do know that Thanos gave Loki the scepter knowing that Loki would take it to earth. This could actually be some kind of chessmaster ploy where Thanos knew that the puny humans would somehow detect the killer AI in the stone and attempt to access it, allowing it to try and take over the world.

My theory was that Thanos activated Ultron at the party. Jarvis and Tony are both surprised that he was able to activate and specifically say that he should not have been able to do that

It's a decidedly sub-par sequel to a successful blockbuster, nothing out of the ordinary.

The main reason it's terrible is that it traded Tom Hiddleston for an awful CGI James Spader with the worst script in history.

Quips themselves is not a problem, but compared to other MCU movies characters came out mentally disabled, unable to actually take anything serious. They don't seem to react to anything with shock, anger, sorrow or anything, they have one emotion - an insatiable hunger for more quips.

It's probably an exagerration, but that's the impression film left on me.
