It will always be in copyright.

When they made the idea of copyright's expiring no one expected things like full franchises and shit to be a thing most would do. So every time the rights for shit like Steamboat Willy they extend the limit a few decades.

It's very unlikely the copyright will extend beyond what it currently is. Not even Disney is agitating for it.

Not that Mickey will enter public domain, even though he should, he's trademarked. And they've reinterpreted trademark law in the last few decades to essentially keep any popular character out of public domain.

At least his classic shorts will enter public domain.

Not really. If other people can do it too then it gives them less incentive so then they'd make other new properties that they can remake over and over for a certain amount of time before those go into the public domain and then have to make more new ones.

If we had copyright law like today in the past characters like Sherlock Holmes and basically all of the stories Disney based their movies off of would never have entered public domain.

People will pay for the real thing. Also I just don't think that companies should be forced to make their shit go into public domain just for the sake of forcing creativity if people aren't demanding it.
