Just a thought, but maybe the reason people like Richard in his own episodes more than others he is in is due to the nature of his character. In episodes he is not the focus, he is a nice, good guy who tries his best, but due to his own faults he doesn't succeed, or may even make things worse, which is frustrating. When given the spotlight, he still has these same qualities, only now he's the one we're seeing trying to overcome some issue further compounded by his own ineptitude, only to succeed, which is satisfying. Being able to be the imbecile yet succeed is as satisfying as it is, though, due to how often we see the outcome turn sour.
