Here we have a trained military man who can't make heads or tails of the suit because it turns out the Iron Man armor is actually this stupidly complicated, impractical thing that was made BY one guy FOR one guy. Seeing him try to figure things out on the fly was fun. He had to take the suit to guys he knew in the air force to try to fix it when it got damaged, he had to do mercenary work to get the cash to maintain the thing, he was hilariously out of his element when the Avengers came calling. Even attempting what he did took huge balls.
When he's War Machine all of that fun stuff gets thrown out the window.
