Would it be better if it just played the hero story straight, without all the modern day commercialism bullshit?

When the movie purely delves into the heroic stuff, it's by no means original, but it's still really effective. When Hercules pulls Meg out of the stream and punches Hades in the face, I actually feel really invested.

It's when the film turns into Las Vegas on bath salts, accompanied by horrendously anachronistic gospel music, that it completely loses me.

Would it be too generic if it just stuck to the Superman formula?
