Because he thought Diane would somehow protray him as a bad guy trying to be good, which she did nothing of the sort because, well, bojack talks a lot about it, but it hasn't been until the end of season 2 that he has shown any real commitment to it. Think back to s2e1 at how he thinks he'll improve: by replacing rather than improving who he is, and even that he does by taking shortcuts and being dishonest with himself about everything.

Bojack wanted Diane to aggrandize this belief of his that merely wanting to be good is good enough to be considered good, and felt betrayed because when push came to shove she didn't lie or enable him.

But some good did come of it. He briefly had a better relationship with Mr. Peanutbuter, even if it was forced.

Remember he said that he wanted warts and all and she just had warts? She also said that people would connect with the flawed portrait she painted of Bojack.

She gave no effort in displaying Bojack's good or sympathetic qualities. Obviously they exist because people like us who watch the show and see the flashbacks understand Bojack as a tragic character and not just an asshole.

I don't get how anyone would think this show is deep or incredibly well written.
Deeper than most cartoons, sure. But most cartoons are for children.

Part of the horror of the show is that Mr. Peanutbutter is naturally friendly and dumb and will always basically be happy because of it.

This would contradict the "there's two kinds of people, happy people and sour depressed people" thing, which was important

Like his troubles with Diane over Season 2 show, or the game show with Bojack, he's perfectly aware of the shit that gets dealt to him. He's not bright, but he's smarter than he lets on.

The difference is, unlike Bojack, he tries to react positively, either finding something to distract himself from his woes or being social.

He tries not to. He tried not to really care about Diane so she wouldn't hurt him as much as his others wives did if their marriage went south. He ended up caring. The marriage went south. He got hurt. But he still kept on caring. That's character growth, I think.

Not really. The big birthday party he threw for Diane was a huge, glitzy attempt to guilt trip her into not leaving. Even the "real" and "downbeat" conversation they had afterwards was mostly him being more subtle about it and revealed that he'd been tacitly saying and doing things over the course of the last few weeks to discourage her from going without actually having to confront her about it.

He gave in eventually. So plus point for him, I guess.
