When did old Warner Brothers cartoons stop being popular with kids?

For the '70s and '80s the old cartoons were everywhere on TV and they got high ratings on ABC. Then at some point the vanished, and Warner Brothers has had to deal ever since then with the problem that kids don't know who these characters are.

Is it just that TV networks don't want to program old stuff, or that WB really mismanaged the catalogue?

The cartoons benefited from the fact that TV stations needed cheap filler material for many years. Plus they were owned by two different companies (pre-1948 cartoons by one company, post-1948 by another) so no one ever had exclusive rights to show them.

Now advertisers and cable networks are much more geared toward new stuff, but no one has ever figured out how to make new material with these characters that works.

Ironically, the old cartoons that E/I pushed out probably did more to educate kids. Not only by teaching them about classical music and dead celebrities, but helping them relate to styles of the past.

When you grow up it's almost too late to learn to watch old movies - they're almost like they're in another language. But kids who watched Looney Tunes and Three Stooges learned to empathize with older styles of filmmaking, the way people used to talk, and so on.

Even with Sesame Street they were constantly bombarding you with old stuff, if only because they had so many films that were shown long after they went out of date.

Today I think there's a feeling that appealing to kids means cashing in on current trends, only little kids don't even know what the current trends are, and if you introduce them to old stuff early enough, they won't even know it's old.

The problem with making new cartoons with these characters is they really aren't characters by modern definitions. They have no continuity and can change everything about who they are and where they live in every cartoon. The only thing that's consistent about them is one or two personality traits that are necessary for the comedy to work.

Scooby-Doo isn't 1/10th as good a cartoon, but it has characters who can adapt to a more consistent way of storytelling. Bugs Bunny isn't like that. He's actually at his best when his antagonists are dumb and pathetic and winning is easy for him, which contradicts all the "rules" of how protagonists should work, but all that matters to him is being funny. But it means that anything slightly less well-done than the classic cartoons is going to be unwatchable, because there's nothing else left to make up for it.

WB really mismanaged the catalog.

WB had Looney Tunes cartoons broken into several groups and each was licensed to a different network: CN had 1934-1948 color cartoons, Nick had 1930-1944 b/w cartoons and some post-1948 color cartoons; ABC had other post-1948 color cartoons. All fought to program them opposite each other and be the biggest draw. The characters were everywhere and popular as fuck.

Then in 1999 WB rescinded Nick's and ABC's licenses and gave EVERYTHING to CN. This somehow sounded good at the time—but WB forgot to require that CN actually show it, and (this is very important!) gave CN no cut of merch royalties on the LT brand.

CN, as a Turner entity, already owned other classic cartoons 100%: Tom and Jerry/Droopy, Scooby-Doo, Flintstones, etc., and took in the merch royalties on them. Looney Tunes were more popular, but gave CN no merch royalties.
Now CN had the chance to literally take Looney Tunes off the air by simply electing not to show them—making sure its own classic cartoons, on which it received more revenue, got the airtime instead.
From about 2003-2008, CN created a reality in which Tom and Jerry and Scooby Doo were the only major classic cartoons.

Looney Tunes have never recovered, because they were strategically withheld from their audience, and the parent company didn't even get it. It's that simple.
