He-Man is just Conan for kids. Since kids don't read comics anymore they should just do an adult version of He-Man. Trying to appeal to nostalgia is pointless since there is none and He-Man is generally remember for having been a lame cartoon.

The Conan reboot wasn't even that Conan-y, why would a He-Man reboot be any more so?

Still baffled people are excited for this guy as Aquaman. Maybe because they like Game of Thrones.

I can see the surface appeal in making an "adult version" of He-Man that is more in line with Conan, but if I'm an adult reader with no particular affinity for the He-Man toys and cartoon, then I'd rather just read some actual Conan comics. Or Vinland Saga. Or Slaine. Or Berserk. Or heck, even some Warlord or Claw the Unconquered.

Taking the "kids' toy" element out of a property originally designed to sell toys to kids (or adults on a childhood nostalgia kick) would probably ensure that the the new comic (or movie or TV series) satisfies no one: It pisses off fans of the original, and will earn nothing but scorn from critics and "non-geeks" who will scoff at the idea of a toy-based media product trying to break into the media market for older audiences. The only segment of the market such an approach would satisfy would be the subset of adult He-Man fans who, for some reason, want their childhood entertainment to "grow up" with them instead of moving on to more age-appropriate fare.

Wasn't it the case that the script for the most recent Conan movie wasn't actually for a Conan film, and that it was simply repurposed after the producers had acquired the Conan film rights?

It would certainly explain why it didn't feel like a Conan movie at all.

(Note that this isn't a particularly rare practice in Hollywood. All sorts of original scripts get reused and mushed together for different "name" projects all the time. I distinctly recall reading that part of the script for GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra was cobbled from an original sci-fi movie script about guys in powered armor, which explains the big setpiece featuring Duke and Ripcord tearing through Paris while wearing "Delta 6 Accelerator Suits").

Even then, the guy didn't really carry himself as Conan at all. He was basically still playing an approximation of Khal Drogo.

He-Man has the advantage of sci-fi elements and a MUCH larger cast. Old school barbarian stuff doesn't really sell to modern audiences.

Sort of, but not quite.

Then-Marvel editor and staff writer Larry Hama had a pitch for a comic called Fury Force back in 1981 or thereabouts that was rejected. It was supposed to feature Nick Fury's heretofore-unrevealed son leading an elite squad of international commandos.

Fast-forward to late 1981: Hasbro approaches Marvel to develop backstories and a tie-in comic for characters based on its revived line of GI Joe toys. By this point, the toys have already been designed and prototyped. Hama takes the assignment, and salvages/reworks some of the character names and bios from his Fury Force pitch to fit the toys.

Fuck it, cut out the middle man and make a proper Conan animated series. Even a miniseries with each episode being an hour or so long and covering the entirety of Howard's stories would be amazing.

My larger point isn't so much about the barbarian setting. It's He-Man's "toy tie-in" context. I imagine it would be very hard to sell studios, publishers, and producers on the idea that a property originally designed to push toys to kids and grown-up collectors would have much crossover appeal to adult audiences who aren't normally into "geeky" culture like action figure collecting and childhood cartoon nostalgia.

The recent flop that is the Jem and the Holograms movie will probably only reinforce that thinking. And the underperformance of stuff like the GI Joe and Battleship movies won't help, either. Right now, the Transformers movie franchise is the exception, not the rule, that defines the mainstream commercial viability of Western toy-based media franchises.

Medieval fantasy does sell to modern, adult audiences, though. Look at the worldwide phenomenon that is Game of Thrones, for example, or the consistently solid international sales figures for manga like Berserk and Vinland Saga, and the surprising durability of the Warcraft video game franchise.
