>>76998725This page is now canon in the main Star Wars Universe. It takes place before Luke and Vader's duel in Cloud City. The problem with it is mostly one of theme and story architecture.
In the old canon, where Luke and Vader meet face to face for the first time in Cloud City, there is a great deal of importance and weight to the encounter. Luke is up against Vader for the first time. He knows he doesn't have the necessary training, he knows he's out matched, and he knows he's walking into a trap. The odds are completely stacked against him but he feels compelled to act out of emotion. He has to save his friends, even if he has to face near certain death.
By having the new canon where Luke and Vader meet before Cloud City, we loose all of that for the sake of letting Vader wheeze out a cliched "badass" line. Having Luke survive this new encounter with Vader without a scratch, even if Vader is simply toying with him, sucks the life out of future encounters. Before this new canon, it seemed inevitable that Vader would kill Luke if he had the chance, or at least imprison him and corrupt him to the dark side. Adding in this fight lowers those stakes. By getting away without a scratch, Luke basically already defeated Vader once. Yeah, he couldn't beat him in a duel, but he could survive the encounter without training and escape. In an attempt to make Vader look badass, the comic makes him look incompetent, unable to sense that Luke is strong with the force and too full of hubris to strike Luke down like the clueless child that he is. Meanwhile it takes the impulsive and irrational Luke and makes him seem more level headed and less reckless. He's already faced Vader and walked away once, completely unscathed. Sure, he knew Vader was toying with him, but there's nothing saying that the proud Sith lord won't make the same mistake again and underestimate Luke now that he's had some training.
