Probably the deepest Western cartoon series on TV at the moment. That's not saying much, of course. But Bojack delves deeply into what makes its characters move, and most characters are larger than life depictions of the sort of people (and their problems) you run into in real life. A lot of people on here identify with Bojack because they recognize his self-destructive behaviour in themselves. But he's deeper than that, and there's also the acknowledgement of this behaviour, and his willingness to improve, while also having a lot of difficulty with it because he's been a piece of shit for so long. Which is why the people who bitch and moan about cartoons on an anonymous forum empathise so much. That's a lot of complexity for a cartoon character. And he isn't even the only one.
On the flipside, the humour is shallow and some of the characters fall flat (looking at you, Todd. Have some fucking character development, you clown).
What helps is that Bojack is one of those new style cartoons that doesn't pretend to be for all audiences. This is a cartoon about adult people problems exclusively.
